Engine Worth It?

70 2.2L
-Broken timeing chain or something like that. (have not taken it apart or inspected further. Could be something else.)
-Zenith Carbs
-901 trans
-Carrera tensioners
-Needs rebuild.
-No exhaust
-6106193 stamped.

$1200

What do you think? It will be going into a 70T project car that I am looking at getting.

Sounds a little steep considering the possible damage inside if it doesn't turn over. These motors seem to be very common. I sold a good running '71 2.2 motor complete with exhaust and carbs and a good 901 gearbox with a brand new starter on it last year for around $1500 to give you a pricepoint. Good luck with your search.

It being local is a + also. The guy has tones of Porsche parts so If I want to swap something on the motor for something else then he would do it.
Would it be a good start if I wanted to upgrade it later on?

It depends on what you want to do. I would recommend a case that has the piston oil squirters installed which I think didn't happen until late 1970 or 1971. If you plan to rebuild it you may just want to find a good 2.7 core with the 7R crankcase. I'm sure many others will chime in here for you with good advice.

a good self full rebuild is big bucks. I figure a good used 2.7 that has papers on the machinist and all installed parts is the best bang for your bucks.. otherwise consider doing a 3.2 'cause your in a position of being sorry later for a bad decision now. A 3.2 w/carbs and cam could be a nice high torque street machine.

Personally I would pass on this engine. Generally speaking a rebuild is going to run about the same dollars regardless of the engine, be it a 2.2 or a 3.2. I agree that you would be better off rebuilding a 2.7
