86 targa price
Hello all; still looking and found an 86 targa, very good condition with only 65K at local dealer and he's asking 22K. Price seems kind of on the high side, even with the low miles. Given the ppi checks out, what would be a fair price to offer him. Also, what are some of the weak areas on this particular model. thanks in advance.

$22k? That seems like a tremendous bargain... you better jump on it soon
![]() '85 Carrera targa Iris Blue 86k miles new everything For what its worth, and I speak from experience, you can put a lot more than that into one (including the purchase price) to make it nice. Ultimately, in the end, it depends on the buyer if it is worth that much to them. Weak areas are head studs, valve guides, tranny synchros, dash, AC stuff... the usual 911 foibles.

I agree - that seems too high, but what do you expect from a dealer? More details would help - is it bone stock? what wheels/spoilers/interior updates/color, etc.? What kind of shape is the targa top in?
The most important/expensive things to check would be the transmission/clutch and engine. You can get a pretty good idea on the transmission just by driving it. PPI will help with the engine but ideally you'd like to know how much oil it uses... also, I would be very skeptical of the low mileage unless there are records to verify it... |

Frenchy, you may be doing the young Padawan (sp?) a disservice as you stole that car! Check out "Porsche Market Letter" at www.PMletter.com That is propabley a fairer price guide and add 10-15% for a REPUTABLE dealer.

I also agree that $22K is way too high for an '86 even if it looks to be in showroom condition. I would keep looking or try to get the dealer to seriously reduce the price, which they probably will not do.

Glenn,
I was just trying to help and giving him a price range but don't believe that he should paid over 20K for this car. I believe 16-18K should be a good price range.

Frenchy, Meant my comment to be a compliment to your negotiating skills! I could have worded it more appropriately. Glenn

Too high. Paid $13.5k for my 84 Targa with 63k miles and in excellent condition. Granted yours would be newer with the G50 trans and should be worth a bit more, but not $8.5k more. Fair price is probably around $17-18k for a G50 car in that kind of condition. Low ball him and see what he says!

Glenn, got it no problem.
By the way I forgot to mention that over the year after the purchase I did spend 1K to fix some minor issues

I got my 87 Targa for 13K a few months back, but it needed interior fixes (seats were trashed) and the paint was oxidized a bit (guards red) it was originally from California.
The car was languishing in Seattle for 4 years and only had 4K miles put on it during that time. Total miles were about 124,000. Mechanically the PPI showed it to be very sound (took it to John Walker's), I figured I will put a few grand into it and some elbow grease so it's shiny and newish again making it about a 17K car. I saw one on eBay that I was corresponding with the owner about, it was an 88’ Targa as I recall, lower miles and had copious receipts and recent rebuild, the car looked mint (ala showroom quality) and he bottom lined the price at 18K…just out of my conform zone for payments however. I am happy with my purchase and now I can customize the interior the way I want it. --Bill

'84 Targa 2 years ago for $11k, it needed dash and new seat covers only. Car had 105k miles and a fresh top end rebuild. I agree, $22k is to high.

i too think frenchy got a great deal on his purchase.
i paid $17k for mine in jan'05, miles were 73k, car is cherry w/records to the 1st owner. private seller was asking $19k. prices are higher here in the northeast, so i'm not bothered too much by these west coast & southern state purchases of $13-$15k.

Frenchy did great on his purchase, I've seen her and she is as he describes. I purchased mine about the same time, an '85 Targa with 153k for $10,500. Not quite as nice as Frenchys, but original owner, all documentation and window sticker. Plus bra, cover, and temp targa cover thingy. The best thing to do is be patient, there are better deals to be had.

I just picked up my 86 Targa with 56k miles for somewhat less than $20k. The car has never been hit, documentation is good.
I'm loving it... http://mysite.verizon.net/ahamilto/targaside_002.JPG

I paid $15K for an '87 with 56K suspension upgrades (front and back sway, bump steer, lowered), a unique original paint code, a second set of fuchs, and a fairly clean car.
I have put about $2k into the car with a new top & seals, and a brake rebuild. A/C is marginal and my next project. I think my car is worth ~$20k. It seems to me to be in the ballpark. Best regards, Paul
