oil seep at the front crank seal
Are 1976 911S I am considering buying has an oil seep at the front crank seal. What is involved to fix this?
The engine has compression of: 1: 150 2: 150 3: 150 4: 145 5: 145 6: 150 The engine was rebuilt 20,000 miles ago. Thanks, Derek |
also forgot to ask - how long does a rebuilt 76 S engine last if driven normally (I know...)
It was rebuilt at 80,000 miles and has had only 20,000 miles put on it in the last 10 years. Dilavar head studs, timeserts...put on. Thanks again... |
Pray that it is the seal and not the nose bearing - this requires the case to be split to fix.

Good luck....I'm praying for your S motor... ;) Edit: If you do get lucky and it's only the pulley seal, it is easy to fix...although you do have to pull off quite a bit to get to it. Muffler, bumper, engine mount, belts, pulleys...you get the idea. |
Depends on what the word "front" means.
In a Porsche, pointing toward the front of the car is actually the Flywheel seal. That means the engine comes out and the tranny is separated from the engine before the $25 part can be changed. If reverse logic is used (in EE speaks: Polish logic), and "front" means pointing toward the rear of the car, then a change can be had with the engine in the car after all the appendages have been removed to grant access. If it is the nose-bearing, then ... all bets are off. Engine has to be rebuilt for that. |
The inspection report said "front crank or oil pump leaking"
I have not yet gone to see the car. The owner has told me it is the "front crank seal" The engine was rebuilt 20,000 miles ago. Is there a way to tell if it is the seal or nose bearing without splitting the case? Thanks, Derek |
Any other thoughts on my question above...?
Thanks! |
See my post in this thread Novice questions for pictures of the leaks behind the pulley and how to diagnose.

Good photo - how do you get the seal out? Special tools?
