Rust repair: lower latch panel.

I thought some of you would be interested in a how-to for lower door latch panel repair. This is mainly for the archives.

Take that damn rust! follow along now...

Rusty parts...

Cut some holes and find more rust...

Patch the inside...

Fab the outside...

Fits nicely...

Weld and grind it smooth...

Its not quite done but you get the idea. The car is currently at the media blaster and will get sealed with POR prior to paint. Its funny, I lookeddown the inside of the rocker channel with a mirror and a flashlight. No rust under there. I really think this originates from the leaded joint. lead oxide is acidic and probably eats steel, then migrates. Oh well, not too bad for a 34 YO car.

I have the same problem on both sides. How bad was the interior? Did you treat the new body parts before welding. I would like to do this but I can't weld. This would also be a good time to reinforce that part of the body. Do they make a replacement pannel for this repair?

DG, there was rust proofing done on the inside and backs of these panels. Yes a replacement panel is available. it is easy to buy the panel and cut out the section you need. This was a bit expensive for my budget.

Yes, I do have a wheel. for this, you could bend the same curve over a piece of pipe in a vice. The wheel is just faster for me.

...and I have had mine longer than Jesse James has been on TV.

I looked at the Pelican Parts list but they are out of both left and right Latch Panels ...are the pelican parts factory or after market and will they be available?

Here's how I did it on a 76 911S a couple of years ago. I wanted to make sure I got ALL the rust:
