Sunday Mountain Driving Pics !
Fall is officially here in Southern Colorado.
Woke up w/ no schedule, blue skies, 1/2 tank of gas & a 1970 Porsche 911E ready to be driven. The route was Durango, Co to Ouray, Co (pronounced yur-ay) About 80 miles of high speed straights, tight corners, 1000 ft cliff drop-offs, golden aspens, beautiful mountain views. The Perfect Porsche road ! Map of route North Map does NOT detail the corners & elevation gain. Route starts at 6500 ft elev, up over Coal Bank Pass 10,640 elev, Molas Pass elev 10,899 ft & Red Mountain Pass elev 11,018 ft. This is one of the most avalanche prone Hwy's in the country. Fortunately today I wont be dealing with that ! 2.2 intervals to get warmed up ! oh yeah !!! Looking down onto Ouray,CO Beaumont Hotel, Ouray CO A great old hotel that was recently restored.

This was my first good opportunity to really drive the car
hard since I've owned it. No co-pilot today grabbing the door handle & yelling slow down....I was flying solo. Reading the thread about Britt & his mishap in his E had me a bit nervous though. Left early enough to avoid the traffic, VI was on patrol, no worries. Nothing quite like a 2.2 winding up to 5500 rpms ! Mountain Curves ahead Cliff bottom You can barely make out the remnants of an old car that went off the cliff. Aspens turning color A view of the edge.. Leaf Green

YES, this is why we enjoy Colorado.
Everyone is welcome to visit. The Rocky Mountain Region PCA and the Alpine Mountain Region PCA are the custodians of some of the best Porsche roads in the world. I and others have many fun stories to tell. Best, Grady |

Very cool! I'm very jealous! Looks like it was a blast. Were there many other cars on the road? I can just hear the engine humming with the windows down, your left hand doing the "airplane thing".

Awesome! I think I've been on the highway before. If it's the road I think it is, there are some hot springs just outside of Durango. Is that the same road?
A good Friend of mine lives in Mancos. He owns Joy's Inc., a chili jelly company in Mancos, stop in sometime if you have a chance. His great grandfather homesteaded a 500+ acre ranch bellow the Rim Rocks, that his father now runs as a Dude ranch - truly some of the most beautiful mountain country I have ever seen.

Nice! I hauled the family to Cripple Creek today and checked out the turning of the Aspens. There is nothing quite like it. Too bad I did not do the drive in a P-car
Saw a white Carrera cab and a couple of Boxsters, but that was it. I gotta make the drive you did...

All I can is WOW! Stunning. The car and the countryside. Leaf Green has been popping up a lot lately on the board. I don't think there's a Porsche green I don't like. I love them all Leaf, Irish, Seafoam, Smyrna, Ice green metallic....
I'm green with envy. By the way, Those are some great shots.

Colorado is such a great state to get lost in. Especially before or after RV season. It's not like it's only one nice road. The state is loaded with all kinds of eye candy.
It could be watching a metor shower at 11,000ft looking like a snow storm, hanging at a hot springs overlooking a valley that has, or had, the highest sightings of UFO's in the US, baking in the middle of a river on a rock and diving into the cold water for your beer, fishing in mt lakes or catching them by hand at a river's edge, exploring a dirt road and being confronted by a bull that looks like it could flip the 911 with one blow, or falling asleep in the middle of no where and finding out your surrounded by horses in the morning. A new visitor could spend weeks exploring that state.

WOW, I'm sitting in the office on Monday morning, it's raining and grey outside and I can't stop looking at these pictures, it looks like it was a fantastic day in a beautiful car. You're very lucky.

Wow is right...my father lives near Colorado Springs, in Monument. I was supposed to see him this month but had to cancel due to work issues.
I try and get out every year at this time to take those drives...he is an old Harley rider: I rent one and off we go. Thanks for sharing those pics...

Taking a Harley up there would be very cool.
Do you mind me asking roughly how much it costs to hire a Harley and take it up there for a week or so?

Don, I was approaching the passes from the South around
9am,. so traffic was very minimal on the northbound trip. I really pushed the corners & straights on the 1st half of the trip. A bit more traffic on the return but it was still a blast Brandon, the Hot springs you speak of are Trimble Hot Springs about 10 miles North of Town in Hermosa, right off Hwy 550. We have some Joys in the house right now...good stuff ! Matt, there is a Harley dealer here in town, plus another place that rents them too. Saw lots of bikes coming the other way, BMW's & some packs of Hogs. Thanks for all the compliments it was a great day. On the return trip I saw 2 Boxsters, and 1 new 997....yes we all flashed ! We need to have a Pelican gathering here, this is just a small sampling of the roads around here. cheers

Matt,
I'm off work today with the flu, so I didn't mind finding the info! http://www.pikespeakharleydavidson.com/custompage.asp?pg=rentals&sid=08961756X9K26K2005J8I15I20JAMQ1694R0 It is a lot of fun...the key is the motorcycle endorsement on your license. I don't own a street bike (I have an old Honda dirt bike), so I lease fairly often, about five times a year. Enjoy.
