Has anyone used VW heater booster motors for heat

I was wondering if you could use a setup like they use on VW's to retrofit the heating where there are two in line blower motors that force the heat into the cabin. This way I could have better heat on my 76 w/o switching to the big blower that goes in the engine bay. I like the way my engine bay looks the way it is now.

any ideas?

How about using Carrera footwell blowers in the cabin?

They should. As I recall, Jack Olsen installed them on his early 911.

I'd settle for less heat, and a lot more A/C. Then again, I live just a screen-door away from hell....

I assume you have already backdated. Seems to be plenty of heat for here but as Rob said if it's too cold for you here just wait until lunchtime. Will be back in shirt sleeves quickly.

DO a search on footwell blowers..tons of info. I have a backdated exhaust on my 78. The SSI's blew lots of heat into the cabin when the car was moving, but you couldn't warm up the car on a cold morning, nor could your defrost the windshield with some sort of blower to move the air when the car is idling or crusing around town. I installed the footwell blowers and never looked back, I tied mine into a 3 position switch to contol the blower speeds. My setup is such that whenever I call for heat the blowers come on..at least is a slow rotation. This will prevent you from cooking the plastic parts.

Does anyone have any pic's or parts diagram of the blowers, and how they go in?

Those blowers sold as part of the VW heat booster kit are actually just 12-volt boat bilge blowers.

You can get the blower individually thru marine parts supplier, like West Marine:

Mysterytrain, what did you use for a 3 speed switch?

Cheers

Ah, I drive by West Marine on my way to work. Where do you attach them?

This is a very timely thread since I am thinking of cleaning up the engine bay by backdating the heat. The weather in Vancouver necessitates having a good defog/heating system in the car during most days of the year.

As an alternative, has anyone removed the AC and kept the AC fan in the smuggler's box to augment the heater?

I did this in my '71 VW Fastback; works great! Not 100% accurate, but the concept is the same.
