Question Bilstien sports or revalve?

I did a search and didn't find what I wanted.

I am swapping out my rear 28mm T-bars for 31mm. I am currently running Bilstien HD's in the rear. I was going to send them out to Bilstien for revalving, but after a conversation with a guy AT Bilstien I'm wondering who's right. Steve at Bilstien said Sports would handle a 31mm t-bar fine. I was under the impression I needed to revalve my HD's to custom spec to handle 31's.

So, the question is: Do I buy Sports or revalve the HD's?

Re-valve - then you can take the car's weight and what you're using it into account. Also, it's $65 each to re-valve, vs ??? for new?

Call Bilstein's west coast number on the website and ask them what their recommendation would be for 31mm Tbars. Jack French is the guy everyone recommends.

His recommendations for my 2200 lb car using 28's was awfully close to stock sports so I just went with those right off the shelf.

I know Steve Weiner and others have their own valving recommendations, anyone know what those are?

You want to talk to Jack at Bilstein.

I highly doubt that Steve Weiner or other mechanics would give that information out, even to a customer. Shock valving rates tend to be proprietary based on the tuner's experience-- or at least that's what they tell me when I ask.

Don't get me wrong, Steve's an outstanding, highly experienced person in all regards, I'm merely speculating that most tuners would regard their valving as a trade secret.

relevant recent thread:

Bilstein revalving...

I recall that I thought steve weiner's fee to spec the revalve was quite reasonable.

My experience regarding asking shops for their valve specs is similar. They don't share this info as a rule. They will revalve your's for you, but they aren't going to share their slice of their livelyhood with you.

If Steve can revalve your's then get him or anyone who is really good at setting up cars do it. Otherwise speak to a Bilstein rep and follow their charts.

So if you pay one of the tuners to valve your shocks with their Top Secret settings, it would seem to me that you're pretty much their b!tch if you ever need one or more shocks re-done. And if their magical formula doesn't work for you, how do you know what to change?

Being more of an "open source" kinda guy, I'd say talk to Jack French @ Bilstein (858) 386-5900 and have him re-valve your existing shocks. Remember to ask for a dyno sheet, too.
