What happens when a Throw Out Bearing goes kaput?
Although i have a fairly new clutch (12k), i have a hunch that the TOB is going (ticking when engaged). Now i have a shudder at about 1800-2000 RPM. Did the TOB go?

Could be.
Is it making a lot of noise when you push in the clutch pedal? |

Mine went THUD, and the clutch pedal dropped.
The TO bearing ripped completely out of the pressure plate... no real warning, just THUD, and it was dead.

When my t/o bearing went out, it was a gradual thing. Just started hearing a gritty bearing sound when the clutch pedal was depressed. Got progressively worse until fixed.

Mine started with a rattling sound when the clutch was released in neutral. It progressed to hearing the sound all the time and it started getting louder. I replaced it before things got worse. I was told that when it lets go, it can take other things with it so its better to get to it before things go boom.

Mine went in my Ferrari, no warning at all. Driving fine, I pushed the pedal in to put the car in neutral as I approached a stop light and the pedal went to the floor with no resistance. Tranny fluid was all over the street behind me. In my case the metal cracked, as opposed to wearing out a moving part.
A stranded Ferrari does not get much sympathy. Best line I heard was from a truck load of stereotypical hicks (I live in TX) driving by in their Ford F150 yelling out the window 'What's the matter, your Ferrari won't go? Boo Hoo!' In retrospect, that was kind of funny. ![]()

On most cars, the bearing will begin making noise when it is not under pressure (ie, foot off of the clutch pedal.) Like Joe said, if you hear a rattle when you foot is off the clutch in nuetral. If you press the clutch, the noise will change or go away.
If you got the noise, it's time for an engine drop....

Exact experience with what Por_sha and fuelie stated. My TOB started ticking when the clutch was not engaged and the clutch pedal vibraded. When I engaged the clutch the ticking went away and the pedal stopped vibrating. My mechanic said he has customers that have driven their cars that way for 6 months without a problem and others who have had the TOB seize the next day.
