TDC 1or 4

Hello, my rebuild is nearing completion and is all sealed up. I'm pretty sure my engine is sitting at TDC for #1. The distributor is not yet installed. Is there any way to verify it is on #1 without popping the valve cover again?

Thanks, Joe

BTW Wayne refers to the FE mark on the crank pulley, what does this stand for?

or take #1 plug out, install a hose for a compression gauge and rotate the engine clockwise until pressure comes out of the hose. next mark up on the pulley will be #1 TDC. ( not to be confused with the full advance mark).

JW beat me to it, that's how I did mine.
The compression guage won't build up much pressure when rolling over by hand but it will show a few pounds which is enough to identify the compression stroke.

Thanks, guys. I just wanted to be sure. I took off the valve covers and it was already on one. I am just setting up the timing on the MFI pump and found the FE mark. I will put the distributor in ASAP to avoid this situation again. Getting real close. A little bit o wiring and exhauxt system to basically finish.

thanks, Joe

I don't think our host sells one of these last time I checked.
