Is the G50 cranky getting into second before warmed up?
87 carrera, is a little reluctant to shift into second before the engine is warmed up. All other gears seem fine. Nothing heard, just a little grind going into second, more noticeable under 3k rpm.
Seems to disappear when the engine is warmed up. Is this normal or could I have an underlying problem? Does not seem to have worsened in the three months that I have owned the car. thanks. |
My tranny (also 87 G50) has always been "reluctant" to shift up into 3rd and grinds if I go too fast. Happens whether car is warm or cold. Doesn't bother me so I haven't investigated further. Do a search on "G-50 shifter bushings" or "G-50 clutch fork upgrade". Your car may or may not have this upgrade which seems to be recommended by many on this board.

They also like synthetic gear lube. Don't use Swepco in a G-50. Too slippery and thick when cold for the Borg-Warner type synchro's to work properly.
|
Definitely likes to be warmed up. Smooths out after 5 minutes. I'm using Redline Synthetic which helped but didn't cure warmup or the g50 rattle/whine noise.

Have the same issue with mine first thing in the morning. I just blip the throttle a little bit to help the syncros engage going into second. Just a little blip.

If you use Redline, make sure it says NS on the bottle. Otherwise it has a friction modifier for LSD's that will be similar to the additive in Swepco that makes it too slippery for the synchro's to work properly. |
Thanks, Tyson. 75W90 NS is what I used. Although I read in a post here or on Rennlist that a Pcar owner at Redline has suggested a blend of NS & their slip variant was ideal. I might try it after the winter sleep.
And to clarify my cold shifting - it doesn't grind but it feels very mechanical when cold - you can feel the metal . . . Ian |
Began to have the issue in the '87 track car - don't remember whether it was 2nd or 3rd.
Changing fluid Redline resolved the situation completely. Great stuff. Used 100% Redline (75W90 NS IIRC), but after that my wrench actually suggested using 50:50 Redline:Mineral Gear Oil. Tom |
Yeah, even with the right oil, sometimes they're just cranky when cold. Just a sign of some normal wear.
|
I changed my gearbox oil - 56,000 miles 87 - it was getting a little notchy going into 2nd gear when cold - changed to Mobil one and it's smooth like butter now!

My 1988 G-50 is slightly heavy feeling from 1st to 2nd to 1st. Sounds like a good winter project, anyone have proven results using redline and mineral oil ?
|
Mobil 1 is recommended over Redline. But for the best protection of R&P and gear faces, Swepco can't be beat -- even though the G50 synchros are better suited to synthetics.
|
do any of you folks with the 75w-90ns red line have a limited slip? do you get any limited slip grabbing/chatter with the red line or did you with other oils?
|
Tyson,
What do you think of Mobil 1 over others? My car also has LSD. |
I'll chime in there -- Not a single ALMS car uses Redline. All use Mobil 1.
|
Is that because Mobil is an ALMS sponsor?
|
Same issue with mine....Mobile 1 helps for sure!

Re-edit:
Tyson, My car is an '87 with an LSD, for Redline, I should NOT get the NS type right? thanks Chris |
