Engine drop (so far)
Got the drop done today, no problems just a few connections that I found after I the engine was down about 6". I will document later some of the things that are different with G50 Carrera's if anyone is interested. All the tips from everyone helped a lot. Here are some pictures and the results of seperating the trans. The forklift worked great. Did the drop solo. Everybody else just watched. Was able to tilt forward and back to get the shift linkage out. The engine mount got tweeked on the left side due to being too tight.

Figured this was the problem. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129352281.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129352436.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129352571.jpg More to come... |
Nice job - and solo to boot. Sorry bout the clutch problems. Can you machine the flywheel or is it toast?
|
Not sure on the flywheel. We have a place in town that I will have look at it to see if it is ok. All they do is sell clutch and driveline parts plus the best machine shop in town IMHO. I have read not to surface a G50 fly wheel just not sure why. The fly wheel looks worse in the pictures than it is.

Any idea what failed first? I've read that the later G50 rubber center clutches are NOT prone to failure like the earlier ones, but looks like this is what may have happened. Great pics, keep them coming, this is superb material for this tech forum.

Jason,
The day that it happened I had run the car to about 143mph. About an hour later I was passing a truck and I thought that I pushed it out of gear early, 2nd to 3rd not so sure anymore, it may have just failed. I do believe the age and the high speed run may have caused it to start to let go. How's your car doing since all the updates? Didn't have my camera better pics tomorrow. |
Nice http://forums.pelicanparts.com/ultim...ons/icon14.gif The more info the better, I'm needing to do the cross shaft update as well and am feeling a little intimidated by the solo first timer engine drop. Most of the info I've been able to track down is for 915 cars. Thanks in advance.

Michael,
The Porsche spec book says the flywheel should not be machined . Do the cross shaft update that does not reqire machining. I inspected my update after a couple of years and it is fine. Job is looking good! |
Mine runs great and turned out just as I had imagined. Best of both worlds: 3.2 and G50, but early 70s RS style and weight. I have put it up for sale as I'm now craving a Boxster after having 2 911s and a 951. Time to try another flavor.
87 Coupe, don't be intimidated, just read the Pelican instructions and do it in sections. Top right of engine first night, top left of engine 2nd night, underneath and drop the 3rd. Use a rolled newspaper on your jack and get the balance point right where the engine and tranny meet, and you can do it with a friend quite easily. |
My clutch went out with a bank!! Had to have the tranny updated. Don't have the flywheel resurfaced, get a new one-DO NOT forget to get the ring gear off of the pressure plate, like I did....more money!! Gooo Luck

Mike looks like you got it out OK. Glad to hear everything went well and no major snags. Do you get to drive the GT while the 911 is out of commission. Was looking for a Bently repair manual today and ran across a book on the Ford GT. Brought back a grin. Have fun and post lots of pictures. Wish I had that huge shop and a fork lift. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif

Here are a few pictures from yesterday and today. Need to get the cam bar tool before I can do much more and I now understand the right tools are your best friend, heat helps a lot too. I've tried to get the GT but no luck with that, yet :)
With the intake gone http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129518152.jpg Chains exposed http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129518344.jpg My engine stand till this afternoon http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129518514.jpg Taking the car home http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129518628.jpg Mounted on the stand and used lots of heat the nuts came right off http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129518811.jpg |
Great Pictures, I've learned by looking at some of these. Thanks.

The engine drop and tear down has not been hard. Read all you can leading up to the drop date. There are a few must have tools that it can't be done without. It took longer that I planned but I haven't hurried the process. You would need another person to do the drop with a jack. It has been enjoyable to do and am looking forward to getting back to it in a couple of days. Just a few more pics.
The intake valves http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129522155.jpg The exhaust valves, Does this look normal? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129522290.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129522387.jpg And oh yes the obligatory engine compartment shot. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129522538.jpg |
Congrats! Now wipe that smile off your face:) I bet it takes a day or 2 before that happens. I know I had a ***** eatting grin for a few days!

Thanks, it was a lot of fun and the forklift made it easy. The forward/backward tilt made getting the shift linkage out easy. Have the engine torn down to the point that I need the cam bar to finish. Great picture, its a good feeling when its done. |
Oh yah, the tilt on the fork lift.. Forgot about that... Thats really cool.. take pix as you go, and share.. Good luck and have fun....
