Front oil cooler installed - pics

I just finished the installation of a front spoiler oil cooler.

After lots of research on this forums and some other place I decided to go ahead with Fluidyne oil cooler. I got mine used (cheap) from a garage specialized in Nascar cars. I had to ask them to reweld the fitting on the top of each side in order for the cooler to fit under my C2 bumper. I also got used fitting and hoses from them. I used 16 AN fittings and hoses.

Here is the cooler

And some technical data for it (blue line)

And some pics of the process. The scary moment, I had cut the front of my precious baby!!!

After some work with metal sheet from a local metal shop ($10), and some welding (pretty good result given my novice skills)

Final result 9picture with bumper install, yet to come, but it is a perfect fit!!

The whole project was under $300.- well below any other alternative I had found.
Hope this help!!

Cheers

Mario Awesome! Got a phone number for the garage on the cooler? Do they have any more? :-)) Thats a great result for a great price. You could cool a 7 litre with that!

Do you also have a fender cooler? In your shoes, I'd be concerned about a 3.5-inch cooler having enough capacity. It'd be a shame to cook the engine for the sake of saving a few bucks.

The airflow looks great, though.

The thing I would be concerned with is the cooler is used. And knowing which teams still use that style of cooler, I'd be concerned. It is definitely big enough (if I remember right those hold almost a gallon of oil), but hopefully you had it sonic cleaned. Also used lines are a bigger risk, clean them good with hot soapy water several times and use an alcohol based brake clean. Looks great as far as your fabrication and location. Good Luck.

Is it big enough? According to Fluidyne's website, the capacity of that cooler is only 1.26 quarts.

What's the capacity of a Carrera cooler? For hot days, even a Carrera cooler isn't enough for a 3.6 -- although the airflow in this case will improve things.

I used an RX7 front mounted cooler that was a little larger than the fluidyne you're using, and I had cooling issues while driving hard on the track. Then again, I was fine on the street, as long as the car was moving. Do you plan on tracking the car much?

Great job on the duct!

Thanks, for all the replies... and yes i am concerned now!!!

Muffinman, just to check, I also have an RX7 cooler, but I decided for this one because it is much larger and airflow is better.

I guess, I will give a try and see how it performs, and if temp seems to raise too much, I will add a fender cooler. Right now it is all i have, no fender cooler.

The guy who recommended me this setup has one installed in his car with a 3.6 an he says that it provide for good cooling. He does track the car very frequently.

Thanks again for all you inputs

You might be fine due to the superior airflow afforded by your duct. When I had the RX7 cooler I had ~1.5 inches from the pan, but I did not have a lovely scoop directing the airflow. My thread shows the old setup better, but it looked something like this:

There's only one way to find out how effective it is...take it to the track and have some fun!
