How do the guages come out of the dash?

I tried to remove the oil guage last night so I can get to a relay back there but I as afraid I'd scratch up the dash. Does the rubber lip around the base of the guage need to be pried off the bezel before the whole thing pulls out? How'd you go about doing this?

I just twisted and carefully pulled it out. I don't think there is much more too it.

or, you can pop the hood and push the thing out from the back. Sometimes pulling from the front is really difficult.

Reach from the back and push. That is much easier. There are no spiders back there so don't be afraid.

I just did this and I found it easy by using a very stiff putty knife. Just this week I changed all my gauges from black to white. I started by sliding it up under the metal bezel from the bottom while gripping the top of the gauge. I pried a little on the bottom then pulled from the top. As it started to loosen up I started to wiggle it side to side to. Then it came right out. The rest of the gauges come out even easier cause you can reach in and push them out without any problem. The rubber part will slide right off the back once the gauge is out.

Don't forget to draw a picture for yourself to where the wires go. I actually found this to be more helpful than all the pictures I took.

That's about it.........

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

When you put the gauges back in use windex or similar as a lubricant on the rubber O-Ring. This will insure that the O-Ring doesn't bunch up.

Once you get one out you can push the others out from the back. May have to take the wheel column plastic off for the speedo and tach.

I have a '85 911 and I got all the gauges out without removing the steering wheel or anything else. Once I got out one gauge you can push out the next one and so on. The Tach was a very tight fit between the dash and the plastic but move it slow as you work it and it'll come out no problem.

Put duct tape on the putty knife so you don't scratch the dash.
