HELP? Fiberglass bumper fitment.
So I got the week off and I am working on my rear bumper replacement. Purchased used from another Pelican. It was a little to narrow so I did relief cuts and got the flares to line up fairly good. The problem is under the tail lights. Now what??
I can not find it binding any where. Is there some thing I can do or should I just live with it. I really want the early style bumper. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Wow, that bumper is really hosed or your car has been whacked pretty good on a rear corner. I've faced both situations. I hope Jack can help you out because you're basically gonna cut that up into sections and rework it to fit. See the upwards deflection at the center bottom? Not good.
I guess your new name is bumperbender. |

Milt, I was hoping you would chime in. Love how your car turned out.
The upwards deflection at the center bottom I noticed. The paint was yellowed under the bumperets, from a dual exhaust set up. This came from a race or track car. Could it be warped from heat? I found no evidence of any collision repair. BumperBender, LOL!!!!!

While I am stalled with the bumper on to more fun.
![]() ![]() Found a hair line crack, I have no welder so I am trying some of this stuff. Had it on the shelf from another project. ![]() ![]() After clean up. ![]() Painted, just have to heat cycle it. I know it will not last but is better than how it looked. ![]()

Lay the bumper upside down on a piece of cardboard and trace one side. Cut that out and use the concave portion to check the other side. Do the same to the body holding piece of CB up under the rear fender.

Found the problem.
![]() Flares are welded incorrectly. ![]() ![]() Explains why one wheel looks like it sticks out farther than the other. I have my work cut out for me when it is time to repaint.

I did some more checking today and the old bumper did stick out almost an inch more on the p. side. The shape is just more forgiving in apperance.
This is good news, the other bumper was not butchered to fit as I would like to sell this one, it is a nice bumper just not correct for my car. I measured from the inner fender wall to the fender lip. Drivers side is 12 inches, passenger side is 11 3/4 inches. Looks like I will be cutting to get a correct fit. ![]()

Cut, fit and glassed. Just waiting for band aid to dry. Then I can remove spacer and finish glassing it.

Morning update
Thanks guys, Did a test fit and I am happy with the results. It is still off a little, I think the other side shrunk.
![]() Waiting for the 5 minute epoxy to dry in the relief cuts. Then I can finish glassing and move on to final prep work. ![]() ![]() ![]()
