?? Fuel pump bad. Suddenly very noisy..

After driving the car all day, I stopped for gas. When I started it after putting $20 or so in (3 gal) : ( ... The fuel pump was very loud. Almost a grinding sound.. Pressure is still ok. (yes I have a guage installed)

This is all after a CIS to EFI conversion that went smoothly.. Could the new fuel regulator setup have added new stress to the pump causing it to go out quicker? It's set at 2.5bar..

I have also noticed the smell of gas recently.. Thoughts?

Lots of junk in the gas these days..I guess stations let the levels drop lower than normal before getting a tanker in. My MFI fuel pump quit last week. I took it apart and a fair amount of crud was in the impeller, cleaned it up, resealed and itseems to work fine now.
There have been several threads on fuel pumps with the general thought being that a dead headed high presure pump is goiung to be working under a lot of stress.

Try a new filter, sometimes it will help

It has a new filter on it now, less than a week old. I did some reading in 101proj. book. It says in there that when it gets noisy it's a warning of complete failure.. Isn't there a screen or something on the intake side of the pump? I would hope so. Who knows what's in the bottom of my 23yr old tank.

Any thoughts on the fuel smell??

CIS pump works @ approx. 7 bar system pressure. Your pump now works @ 2.5...it might be overspeeding.

A good indicaton of the pump health could be obtained by measuring the current drain of the pump. If it is approaching 8.0 Amps [the limit per the factory spec book] ... you may need to change it [for good measure] to one more suitable for EFI system pressures.
