OEM vs. Standard GBC fuses

After replacing my plugs/wires today I noticed the brake lights & driver side headlamp/tailight on my '87 911 Carrera Targa were not working. After checking the bulbs (which were fine), I checked the fusebox. Both 16 amp fuses were blown. The only fuses available at the store were the standard European GBC 16 amp fuses. I installed the new fuses, turned on the lights/tapped the brakes and within seconds the plastic fuse melted/smoked (but did not blow). Last year, when replacing the A/C fuse with std. glass fuses it blew several times. After replacing it with a genuine porsche fuse it was fine. Has anyone else encountered such a problem with regular store bought fuses? The GBC are plastic and the OEM seem to be porcelin. Could this actually be an indication of something more serious such as a short? If so, how can I diagnose the problem?

Sounds like the problem is a short. I wouldn't focus on the fuse...fix the short.

Pelican has wiring diagrams for various years of the cars.

Frankly, I don't know how to troubleshoot electrical shorts. There's an art to it, however. I'm sure someone will chime in.

Haynes publishes an automotive electrical manual. It's generic (i.e., not Porsche-specific), but it contains sections on how to troubleshoot car electrical problems.

Good luck.
