Strip paint from dash - suggestions?
Well, I'm going to be transplanting parts from my '70 coupe into a '69 Targa I'll be buying from a couple local p-car enthusiasts. The dash in the Targa is pretty much hosed, but the dash in my coupe is fine.
Except some moron PO decided to do a red/black scheme in the interior, and painted the dash. It looks maroon in comparison to the bright red vinyl and carpet trim. What would be a good product to get the paint off without damaging the surface of the dash trim?

thats gonna be a tricky one. any solvent based stripper is gonna be absorbed in the vinyl and maybe destroy it. hows the condition of the paint? maybe just painting over it with some vinyl paint would be a better idea. try alittle fast dry laquer thinner and see if some of it will wipe off but don't get it too wet.

The paint is a little faded, a couple spots appear chipped off, but the paint is not laid on the real thick.
I feared the same thing, a stripper would eat the vinyl and destroy the dash. The laquer thinner sounds like a good idea... I'll try it on a spot not easy to see when the dash is out. If that doesn't work, I think the paint suggestion will end up being the best solution.

If you can haul the roller over to a sandblaster you can tape/paper off the dash pad and sandblast the metal.

The paint is actually just on the vinyl edges, the metal is still black...

Try painting it again with a landeau (sp?) black & see how it looks. Another thing would be to get it redone by Just Dashes ($450+, but it's like new & guaranteed as long as you own the car).

Marv, thanks for the suggestion... I think it will probably come down to painting over it. The dash in my coupe is overall in very good condition. The speaker grille is there, and there are no cracks or splits. The dash is from a later car, though, so it is definitely not original.
