Where is my oxygen sensor ?

According to the PO the catalytic converter were professionally removed since its not required on a 85 here in Sweden. Now, I have been toying with the idea of a new exhaust system and had a closer look under there today.

Sure enough, the converter it self is still hooked in but the heat shield is gone and even more strange - I canīt find the oxygen sensor, thats supposed to be mounted on the inlet side of the cat.

Could the "removing" just mean that the internals were removed (it sounds rather hollow when knocking on it) ? And where did the sensor go ?

I know - how in the h#Ī% would you know...??

How about showing us a pic - he probably replaced the cat with a premuffler which sort of looks like a cat.

livi 10-28-2005 08:46 AM

Here is a badly taken pic. Is it a premuffler ?

That looks like a premuffler to me.

Rot 911 10-28-2005 08:56 AM

No that looks just like the cat that was on my car.

livi 10-28-2005 08:57 AM

Thanks ! Is a premuffler just a hollow tube connecting parts, or does it have a function ?

And, where did he put the sensor ??

Kurt, wait a minute - now I am confused ! :)

VincentVega 10-28-2005 08:59 AM

The O2 sensor fitting should be on the top front section, if there is one. If not, you can weld one in, no biggie.

KobaltBlau 10-28-2005 09:00 AM

I submit that the PO doesn't know what he is talking about, and your car never had an O2 sensor or a catalytic converter, and the premuffler is original.

livi 10-28-2005 09:01 AM

Now I am beyond confused ! I thought the DME used info partly from the oxy sensor and that the car would run like crap, if at all, without it.

According to Bentley, all 85 where equipped with a cat. ??

mackpipes 10-28-2005 09:28 AM

Not if it is a ROW car.
My car was a Euro delivery car that had to be Federalized before entering the United States. The pre-muffler was removed and a cat was installed.

livi 10-28-2005 09:45 AM

Aha ! The Bentley manual is American. So, its a premuffler - thats established.

But still, does it not need an oxy sensor ?

Bill Verburg 10-28-2005 11:12 AM

Some '87-89 Carreras used cats some did not
'87 -'89 930/25 used cats
eng #s starting w/ 64H, J and K

Sweden got 930/26
eng#s starting w/ 63F,G,H, and J

livi 10-28-2005 11:34 AM

Right, Bill.

Mine was imported from Germany three years ago. I think they have a regulation that would give you a lower tax (or some kind of cost reduction) if you had a cat installed. So maybe mine came without from factory, was installed by original owner i Germany and then removed when imported to Sweden ?

Who am I now ? Sherlock Holmes ??

Still, about the sensor - does not the DME need it ?

Bill Verburg 10-28-2005 11:39 AM

No it does not.

livi 10-28-2005 11:47 AM

Thats a double AHAA !

Puzzle solved - as usual around here.

Thanks a lot !!

Rot 911 10-28-2005 12:01 PM

Damn my bad, I forgot you had a ROW car. Bill is correct. You have a premuff and ROW didn't use an O2 sensor.

livi 10-28-2005 12:08 PM

Your great guys ! I could cry out of shear appreciation - I wish school was this educational for my kids.

drsimonwong 10-28-2005 02:43 PM

Euro 85's had no cat and ran on leaded fuel and pumped out 231bhp.

livi 10-28-2005 03:10 PM

Two out of three. Its UNleaded gas.

randywebb 10-28-2005 03:55 PM

Where is my oxygen sensor ?
- there are a bunch in each of the alveoli

The car's O2 sensor will be a big round dingus sticking up before the muffler on a US car.
