need advice on tires for my new rims

Yesterday I purchased some Borbet 17 inch rims for my 83SC. They are 17X7.5 ( ET23 ) and 17X9 ( ET17 ) so these will fit with no adapters. The intent of this purchase is to have a second set of rims/tires to be used for autocross and maybe a DE each year plus be used on the street as a backup set. My car currently has 911 Fuchs in 16x7 + 16x8 with 205/55x16 + 245/45x16 Yoko ES100'S. So based on that what size 17's should I go with? I don't want to go crazy wide and I think I want to go with 255/40x17 in the rear but I am undecided what size for the front. My car currently is at standard US spec height ( high) and I am planning on lowering it to Euro height. I also want to maintain speedometer accuracy the best I can. So what are you guys useing for sizes and brand of tires? Budget is a concern that's why I went with the ES100's originally and have been happy with them but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks

First I cannot endorse the Borbets for any track use

For street use 225/45 f and 255/40 r should be an easy fit, as either tire gets bigger fitment issues go up exponentially

Thanks Bill. I have seen pics on the internet of Fuchs that have come apart also. I do not plan on full time racing just 5-6 auto cross a year and maybe one DE. I'm sure any wheel can come apart under extreme conditions plus metal fatigue or cracked.
