I need to cut the old stuff out and then fit the new flare on each rear quater! I have been told from a few body shops they would get 6 hours for each without finish filling etc.. What do you think.. Give some rates you guys would feel comfortable paying

there was a good thread about this in the past few months. It seemed like body shop pros where saying it's a better install. They mentioned which of the many glues to use also. I'll try and search the thread later.

Before I got a welder and learned to put flares on myself, I called around. IIRC I was quoted 300/side w/o the finish work (filler and paint).
It's a time consuming task if done right. |

6hrs each sounds a little long. The first one might take you that long. I did a set of flares on a 914 a couple years ago. But I can't remember how long it took. If I were you I would see if you could charge time and materials for the job.

My first time putting on flares, I spent less than 6 hours per side, and that included filling a priming.

Ben, the 3M stuff that Ron posted the link to is what we used to put the fiberglass turbo flares on the race car...Craig, you saw it in person..my body guy had it done in about 4 hours which included the fill and prime.
As far as integrity of the joint...I dropped the shell on it's side once (long story) and the flare cracked a bit, but the joint didn't even flex.

Ben,
I just scratched my prior post, I read your question wrong..... I would charge $1000 for all 4. ...and he has to finish the body work.

Yeah he wants steel flares I have steel flares and I would weld them on.. I learned long ago not to charge to little (long story as well) and again I don't want to charge so much to rip the guy off.. I felt 3 hours per side (just doing the back) would work for cutting old fitting new welding new and grind weld down.. Does that sound right?? now if that sounds right how much per hour do you guys see?? I know what my business charges but this would be a side thing

Ben, just charge time and material. IMO, it is the only fair way to do custom work (assuming the guy doing the work is honest). I do this for my side aircraft business, if someone does not like it they can go elsewhere.

If you know the guy, you could quote him a hour charge with a max fee. So you say 6 hrs per side and then it comes out to only 10 hours total. Charge him this and you'll both feel like you got what you paid for in the end. If it takes you 13 hrs this time, chaulk it up as a learning expense...you'll be faster next time and he'll feel as if you were an upright person sticking to your qoute. Good will and a happy customer is never a bad thing, side job or not.
By the way, I'm a happy customer of yours ![]()

I agree with your statments but idealy I would not be doing this on a daily or even a yearly basis. I really wonder what most pay to have this done and I would do it at probably 2/3rds of what the going rate is as this would be a favor.. Of course there is no way I am going to take away from my muffler business for a 100-200 dollar job that would just be crazy..

Just a datapoint: My tinner charged me $600 to buttweld, metal finish and prime a pair of RS flares on my '73 several years ago. Prices have gone up on everything since then, so maybe that would be low these days.
