WHat is this?

With a baby on the way and a new house being purchased I had stopped looking for a 930, but his one is local so I have to at least take a look today....The car has a knob sticking through the rear tunnel. What is it for- a locking differential maybe? From the looks af the way the carpet has been cut it looks like it might be a hack job. Is this considered an "upgrade" if done correctly?

I think that is for boost control.

Well, the picture is a little fuzzy but it is probably an adjustable boost control. It would allow you to adjust the turbo boost within a certain range. Failing that, it might be an adjustable brake proportioning valve for the rear brakes. Given that it is on a turbo, the former is more likely.

I can't see enough of it to ascertain how well it is installed but what I can see from the picture doesn't impress me. If it regulates boost, I'd want to know what the highest setting delivers. They can be useful to decrease the boost for driving in the rain, or whatever, but my right foot does a pretty good job of that for free. If it is set to increase the boost to stupid levels, I wouldn't buy the car.

It should either be a boost control or brake bias adjuster.

That is the adjustable valve that is connected to the wastegate, so you can increase \ descrease the boost to the engine or bleed off what you do not need. Go to the track crank it up, drive it home bring it back down....notice the "plus" and "minus" on the dial with the arrow indicating direction.

Its an aftermarket unit and back in the '70s and '80s a very popular thing to do. Many RUF cars had it too but the knob was placed between the front seats for easier access.

Somewhat cool, and definitely NOT a deterrent to buying the car, if the car is clean, drives well, has receipts...well you know the drill.

Any other pics of the car? year?, price?, condition?

thanks for the info. The car has been on Ebay before,it sold before I got a chance to look at it, but the buyer never paid. The front valence does look a little rough, hard to tell much about the rest of the pics. Says it sat for 10 years, thats not good i know.

It could be that the buyer took one look at the car in person and backed out of the deal.

the wastegate adjustment is for when a corvette pulls up next to you and you can crank up the boost so all your rings break, among other things.
