Floating the idea of selling my '72 911T. Input welcomed.

Hi guys,

Some of you may remember this car from a couple of months ago when I was posting about rust issues. I am still planning to take a welding class in the winter, but in the mean time, I have to look into all my options and see which is best. I am still trying to get into a garage space with some friends so that this car can be more protected from the elements. I cannot garage it right now, so it is difficult to work on and difficult to protect from the elements.

The car is here:

The car needs a front pan, and it needs the rear parcel shelf, firewall, and possibly rear seat sheetmetal mostly replaced. There is surface rust which is visible in the gallery pics, and as we all know, there is probably more rust hiding. The car is ready for a service. Valve adjustment, rebuild kit for the Webers, and the usual inspecting and lubing and whatnot.

I have done a lot of nickel and dime work to this car over the years and can provide a list if it helps. I probably have most of the parts receipts for this work but I have been unfortunately disorganized with those records. Work done by me includes clutch job, calipers and lines, shift linkage, and lots of smaller stuff. This car did around 40,000 miles in the first two years I owned it, and has done maybe another 5k over the eight years since. The engine is a Dwight Mitchell build from 1980 with around 100k, and received Carerra tensioners and the Webers during the mid to late '90s. I purchased this car in January 1995, and I am the third owner.

At this point, I have to consider the possibility that any panel work I do over the winter and spring could go to waste without enclosed or at least covered storage. I would love to keep the car, and I may never be able to afford to buy another one down the road. Who can tell? I have thought about selling the car before, but those times were always fits of desperation. Now, I am at least in a position where I can consider all the benefits and drawbacks of letting the car go from a rational standpoint.

So, I am open to opinions pro and con regarding selling the car, and to valuation and approaches to sell. If I feel I need to sell it, it will most likely go up in the classified forum here before it goes anywhere else. I hope I understand correctly that this forum is the place to solicit opinions on valuation and sale, and that the classified forum is expressly for listing rather than commenting on the car.

I will probably post more here as I think of it.

Thanks very much,
Andrew

Personally i would restore it. as the 72 is going to be sought after Big time in the future. That right rear oil door is appealing to people and thats what makes it unique. Hold onto her you wont be sorry.

That's a lot of body repair - OTOH, it IS a '72.

Also, it took 30 years to get in this shape, so another year or two won't do much to it - now or after you repair it.

Cool Do as much as you can!

If you make only half the repairs you talk about doing, you will still make money. 2 years ago when I was looking at Porsches, the 911T's barely got out of the $10K range. Now, they're ranging from $15-20K if they are in good shape. A lot of money for not a lot of motor in my opinion, but you have a nice looking car there, with a good color, you should do fine.

Andrew, would you mind sending me a close up picture of your paint code plate? I can't read the one on your website. I also have a signal yellow '72. My paint code plate is currently coated in paint, but I want to see if our plates match once I strip mine. Thanks. (twopointsevenrs A T hotmail D O T com).

I can shoot a pic tomorrow evening and post it here. I'll be doing some work on my 2002 so it should be easy!
