Quick question, oil check..
Hi!!
When starting a 911 from 1988 from cold, how long do I have to wait before I can check the oil? Do I have to drive the car for awhile, or is it enough to have it idle for a minute? The manual says that I'm supposed to idle the engine for 30 seconds, but it doesn't say wether this is after a long drive or not.. Thanks!! |

Engine has to be at operating temp, I believe
Put it on a level surface before you check

It should have reached operating temp let's say after 20 min or so, depending on the outside temp.
So after a few hours of driving, you should be ok. Just let it rest for a minute on a level surface, then check oil

Like mentioned, drive it till the oil temp gauge has stabilized and does not raise anymore. Depending on outside temp it takes around 20 - 30 minutes. Park on level ground and let idle for a minute or two till oil level gague is stabilized. Now take your measure. Aim for mid marks on stick (which equates to around 3 o´clock on my gauge).
Note that even a slight engine "under temp" will lead you to believe you are low on oil when checking the stick (and gauge) - possibly resulting in overfill.
