no 2nd gear - '84 911

Hope you guys can help... I'm normally in the 356 fora and OT...

Anyway, Mom called and 2nd gear on her '84 TL 911 has gone buh-bye. When she tries to shift into it, it doesn't want to engage and it feels as if it is being pushed back out of gear and into neutral. It can go into position (and stay there) with the engine off.

Any ideas? I'm pretty much a mechanical idiot, but I've managed to keep my 356 going. I don't want to fix this on my own (unless it is super easy) but I'd like an idea of whats wrong for when I get the car to the shop.

Have her tow it to her wrench to prevent any further damage from all the broken pieces of synchronizer dog teeth circulating in the oil and prepare for a rebuild.

Sorry mom!

Crap. Probably gonna cost more than a new trans for my 356 too...

Any estimate on how many hours of labor we can expect to be getting hit for?

Check the linkage, bushings and coupler in the tunnel- remove the plate on the floor in front of the rear seats. Maybe something slipped.... If not then probly time for a rebuild.

You'll know for sure when they pull the drain plug and all these bits of metal (dog teeth) start pouring out.

Just had the same problem on my 84. Here is an excellent thread about DIY rebuilding:
Can't Shift Into First
There are many more if you search on "915 Rebuild"

My parts tab alone was ~ $1700 (but I did the full JW recommended list which many shops probably won't do)
