Newbie, Fast Idle Help

Ok guys, I just returned from a 2 day, 1200 mile trip from Buffalo New York to the Florida Panhandle in my new purchase...a 1980 Guards Red Targa with 71k miles. This was an Ebay purchase from an Acura dealer and I have to admit this was the first time I've ever bought a car sight unseen much less drive it across country immediately! I was definately nervous for the first few hundred miles but the trip was relatively uneventful. Along the way the car began to develop an ever increasing idle speed. By the time I arrived home the car was idling at almost 2800rpm. If I open the oil cap the car settles down to 1000rpm or so. Last night I ordered the Bentley manual but it won't be here for a couple of weeks and I'd like to get this car on the road as soon as possible. I found the 101 projects book at Barnes and Nobles but no information on the fast idle problem. Can anyone point me in the right direction? The car starts relatively easy when cold and warms up for a minute or two at about 1200rpm and then all of a suddent takes off to 2800rpm. Adjusting the idle speed screw doesn't help at all unless I remove the oil filler cap.

HELP!

I've made the mistake of not posting pics of my car in my first thread. Been living with the the shame ever since...
Don't make the same mistake.
