Yet another Charcoal Canister Thread
My '69 911T had the charcoal canister and all the plumbing ripped out by the previous owner. I'm tired of having my garage smell like the inside of a gas can. I found the plugged hole for the presurizationi line on the fan shroud. I'll have to add a nipple there. Where do the two lines that run up to the trunk / charcoal canister enter the engine compartment? I can't find those. In a previos thread, a picture showed the two plumbed lines coming up around the pedal cluster from the center tunnel. Where do the lines go from there? I also know the canister mounts in the front left corner of the trunk next to the left battery. I have one battery sticking out of the left battery tray. I guess I will have to rotate the canister sideways. Any thoughts on how to secure it in place?

On a '73, the two braided hoses from the charcoal canister go into the interior compartment around the pedal cluster and attach to 2 metal lines that go into the center tunnel. These metal lines exit the rear of the tunnel (around the accelerator linkage) where each gets attached to another braided hose. These braided hoses run up and around the left side (there are 2 or 3 metal 'U' shaped straps attached to the engine firewall that the braided hoses run under to keep them in place). They enter the engine compartment in the back leftmost corner where the fuel pump electrical cable enters.
Hope this helps, Gary |

I don't believe that a 1969 T ever had a charcoal canister system. Mine did not, and it was damn original when I bought it back in 85...
Anyone else have input here?

Craig, on a 1973.5 car, the charcoal canister is in the same place as on yours. Gary described my hoses runs exactly - not sure if he has a (CIS based) 73.5 or a '73, sensu strictu.
Be sure to replace all the stiff and cracked hoses in the evap. system - there are threads on that. I don't know much about '69....

My car does have the expansion chamber under the trunk cowl on the driver's side, but not much else, so I know it use to have the system.

Bill, (silverc4s) You know I think you're right about the '69 not having the charcoal system. I did some research and I found a pdf part number/diagram catalog for the '68-'69 and another one for '70-'73. The '69 catalog only shows parts for a non-charcoal system. Mine doesn't have the tube pickup on the fuel filler neck, just a hose drain dumping overboard from the rubber sleeve around the filler neck. The vent from the gas tank goes to the expantion chamber up under the cowl, then down into the cabin to the center tunnel (I think. I'll have to pull up the carpet.) I bet there is nothing connected to the other end of the tunnel. I will probably change all the clear hoses and run a line from the rear of the tunnel to the engine. Maybe I can find a small aftermarket charcoal filter and put it inline on the line to the engine to keep vapors from freely escaping. I'm thinking that would get rid of the smell.
The '70-'73 catalog show both systems with and without the charcoal system, for the Euro and USA models.

i still have the charcoal canister but am looking to remove it. by now is it still serving any purpose other than taking up trunk space?
btw, the braided hoses in the engine compartment have not been attached to the shroud for a looong time now

Where can one buy a charcoal canister for on '87? I didn't see it when searching this site.
