getting the undercoating off

my bodyshop guy used the peel and strip stuff (www.paintremoval.com) and it worked great. i had the shell media blasted but the undercoating basically tuned a tan color and stayed stuck to the shell. the peel stuff uses a plastic sheet to help the stripper soak into the undercoating instead of evaporating. after a couple days the undercoating just scraped off by hand. the stuff has a citrus smell - not the aircraft stripper smell. now the repair work and modifications can get done.

nice work. Thats the dirtiest and nastiest job Ive ever done on one of these cars. I would definitely pay someone to do it the next time.

The Valvoline Tectyl undercoating used by the factory is a tan-colored PVC product ... that is paintable. It was applied before the body was painted. That is why media blasting revealed a tan, undercoated shell ...

The Peel-Away products do look promising!

i think my bodyshop guy used the peel away 1 stuff. i originally tryed to strip the stuff off myself but after a couple quality days with aircraft paint remover i decided my time and lungs were better spent doing other things. i plan on using a more modern paintable undercoating. i don't know what it is specifically but is is much thinner and is not a tar like rubberized type.

I've seen dry ice used and it is fast and inexpensive to use. All you need to do is palce it on the area, cover it with a blanket or burlap sack and let it sit for about 5 minutes, renmove it from the area and use a putty knife and just pop it off. You can even put it inside the strut towers and the stuff just cracks right off. I should also add that if you have the car on a rotissory the entire undrecoating job goes even easier. Dry ice can be purchased at many supermarkets and probably where you can buy regular ice. And don't forget to get some regular ice to cool down the beer you'll be drinking afterwards because this will save you a bunch of time.
