I say Steel all the way .. the alloy lugs have come loose on me in the past (on the track). The steel are great once you torque them down they stay, that being said I am sure the alloy are fine for street use but I'd still check them from time to time.

Yes there are differences in weight and appearance. I use open steel for the track set and closed aluminum for street use.
