Potential "Can of Worms"? Advice needed...

I just found out I won the auction on an eBay car that is fairly local with a bid that (I thought) was fairly low...

Here is the auction:
Auction Link

So we essentially have a theft-history 1977 911 with a full steel 993 conversion, and a 3.3L turbo block. The 3.3L apparently has 32k miles on it, and is running a larger intercooler, has a bigger turbo, 964 cams, etc.

An inspection would be a given, as would a leak down test of the engine - any other thoughts/recommendations? Anyone know of a shop near Victorville that they would recommend?

I honestly didn't think it was going to sell so low, but (at least to my untrained eye) this would appear to be a great deal?

Certainly I would see the car in person (checking out the body work while there), and take it for a purchase inspection, but what potential areas of concern are there on this car? What should I ask the shop to focus on when doing the inspection? What shop is anywhere near Victorville, CA that can be recommended? I take my cars to Vision Motorsports here in Orange County, but (obviously) Victorville is 1.5->2 hours drive, so that is out of the question.

$15.8K is a steal! Even if you dump another $15K into it. No way it could be replicated for that cost.

But lose that steering wheel quick and get rid of those gauges on the A-Pillar.

Like JW says, it's anybody's guess on what kind of deal you got.

Why is the motor out of the car?

And why, oh why, does it come with a television installed?

I can't say about the body but thats a 3.2 intake on the motor, so most likely its had an EFI conversion done=$$$. I would leak down preformed and if that was good i think this car is a steal, you could sell the engine close to what you payed for the whole car OR part it out (start with selling me that intercooler

Help me here somebody. You bid on a EBay car and get it at a price you thought was too low. NOW you want to do a PPI and are having second thoughts?
It seems to me you entered into a contract by placing your bid to complete the sale. You expect the seller to sell at your bid price?
By placing your bid you put yourself ahead of all other bidders willing to buy this vehicle. Now you are looking for a way out.
You have a choice, bail on the contract you entered into or do what you agreed to do and complete the deal.
A man is only as good as his word.

Certainly I intend to follow through with my purchase, but I don't see anything wrong with having at least a leak down test performed on the engine and perhaps a purchase inspection done, if only to verify the seller's details in his auction listing - I wouldn't call this, as you suggest, "looking for a way out", but would instead consider it as being smart when looking to buy a used porsche.

I have sent an email to the seller asking for details regarding a deposit, and asking for arrangements to get a leakdown test performed - I will update this thread as the sale progresses...

have a very good shop do a PPI but you should have arranged that with the seller prior to bidding.

Looks like a steal ! Wonder if that 5spd is a g50 unit . As long as the engine is good you cant go wrong . The engine is intalled and running right .
Looks like the body conversion was taken seriously . They even swapped in a 993 wiper cowl . Notice how closer the wiper arms are .
I would think this guy has 4-5 times what you paid invested in this thing .
Good investment ? For you maybe

I see no conflict with winning this bid with payment contingent upon validating the seller's claims. However, this should be agreed-upon up front, or maybe at this point in time with online car sales, already a given.

Fit and finish with body mods is always an issue, especially DIY, but I hope it turns out to be a good deal.

Whazzzzzzzzz Upppppppppppp -

Ok, as a " seller " on Ebay, I would like a " bidder/buyer " to tell me up front that his " bid " is dependant on anything, if he does not contact me before bidding I figure that he is taking me at my word on what ever I write in the add.

The real problem with Ebay in general when it comes to buying or selling is if the bidder does not pay for an item or walks on the deal for any number of reasons , what are the " real " options most people have, it comes down to leaving " negative feedback " and guess what that normally gets you a slap back of the same kind, I would venture to guess that not too many people really take anyone to court over these Ebay deals, but I might be wrong on that.

As to the car you bought, it looks like you made a decent deal, if the car is as described, the only thing that " pokes me in the eye " is his comment of 25 years of Porsche wrech turning and the comment about " surging " if he is that knowledgeable why would he continue to live with this instead of fixing it ???

Good luck, and if you decide to part it , I would like dibs on the seats ... lol
