Let's see some aftermarket Shift Knobs
 

I was looking at some Momo's and was wondering if they would stay tight on the lever ? Or is factor the way to stay ?

Here's a sparco one I picked up cheap. It matched the other Al parts so I got it. To install I think I filed the end of the shifter rod a little bit, then pushed the knob down and tightened the set screws.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131505372.jpg

bob, i have that momo unit your looking at. i also have 2 that i picked up that are sparco brand but in black suede. if your interested in a suede one i will sell it for $10 plus freight...thanks, brent

Here is one of those nice rosewood sandwich 917 knockoff knobs that a Pelican was selling last year. It goes well with my Weissach's tired red interior. I love this knob and I often have to remember not to hold the thing after shifts. YMMV.

DeutschMark? No barf here...the absolutely BEST hand fitting shift knobs I ever used were Hurst knobs on the GTO Pontiacs I had...1965 and 1966 models. "Stylin" is one thing. What best fits the human hand is another. All that said, my originality hang up keeps me running the original equipment knob in my 911.

Bob, I had that very Momo knob in my car. It felt great and was held into the shifter with threaded hex screws. I think you'd like it....

I used a cheap aftermarket version because it had the top bolt pattern that matched my steering wheel center. It came with a highly buffed finish so I used my own titanium look finish on the knob and wheel center ring. I've tried several knobs, but like this one because it is a little larger diameter and fits your palm a little better.

AC Schnitzer, I find it one of the most comfortable of all of them, have it in my M3 and the 911

Will that 917 type shift knob fit on a newer type shifter? The ones where there is a bolt in the center of the knob - 1985 or so...??

Can anyone tell where I could purchase the 917 "knock-off" or Carrera GT shift knob? I did a search and a user named Mark Cross actually made a run of the 917 knobs last year. I'd prefer the CGT one. Didn't find much resale info on them...

If you want a 917 knob, go over to 914club.com, in the forums there is a "resources" section which is a commercial sales forum, a guy there makes and sells them suprisingly cheap.

If you like the leather momo, pep boys sells a 3A racing knockoff for 20 bucks that I've had in my Carrera for 3 years and love.

I particularly like this wine bittle shift knob.

My 2nd car has the momo. I like it a lot.
when we built the current car last year we used the 917 style knob, only because it was lighter.

I have to say after a track season worth of use... I love it.
its pretty comfy!

I'd give it a thumbs up. (although the momo one pictured above was good too)

but hey... weight is everything right?

I have the Momo in my 930 and really like it. Has a very factory appearance.

I might be the only one using one of these.

Is that a good thing?

I have had the momo pictured above and i personally prefer the factory knob. Careful with your factory one when you take it off, so you can put it back on again if you like it better!

Daryl - I have a 8-ball shift knob - but cant' figure out how to mount it. It has a metal insert drilled & tapped for a very small shaft.

I've never had any small shaft problems, sorry can't help you there ;)


Mine uses 3 set screw to attach and came with a couple plastic bushings for different sizes, if I remember correctly.

There has been a spark of new interest in my 917 replica shift knobs, so I thought it was time for an update. Yes I do still sell them, however they are now sold through my new company (WBS Fabrication and Machine) and because of demand and material price changes I have had to raise the price since last year. They are available in 901, 915 and G-50 shifter configurations and 1.5" or 1.75" diameter sizes. The smaller is the original 917 (38mm) size. The price is $50 + $4 shipping (USPS priority). Randy - I was hoping you wouldn't ask where . . . . now I have to state in an open forum that I got it at Mal*Wart.

It's heavy, and pretty close to regulation size. I think it's made from a real 8-ball.

Ha ha - I'll check it out on my next trip...

A More Important Consideration is Feel:
A metal knob might have a "Machine Age" look to it, but it is cold in winter and hot in summer, and feels hard. BAd Ergonomics. A very readable book on ergonomics is the Design of Everyday Things....

I love my 917 shift knob. It is one of the nicest little updates I have made to my 87 Carrera. The feel is great and it looks right at home with my otherwise stock interior. It works nicely for those moments when I pretend to be Michael Delaney (Steve McQueen) in the film Le Mans--pure Porsche 917!

My departed father had a great leather (?) covered shift knob on his early 50's GMC pickup. Over the original knob, he'd placed the scrotum sack of a western whitetail deer he'd just dressed out, tied the bottom of the sack tight with a small piece of sinew. Mom never did ask what it was. I suspect she knew...:rolleyes:

I have a titanium shift knob, similar in style to Ruf's aluminum one. It is made by titanium cavallino(they make Ferrari shiftknobs and pedal sets) specifically for 911s. It has a great feel and subtle look and I used a silver crest on my 930s wheel to match.
