How to ship an engine

How & who would you use to ship an engine (turnkey). Other than putting it on a pallet, should it be boxed, wrapped, etc?

Any carrier suggestions.

I've shipped with Yellow Freight, with no complaints. The engine should be on a pallet, and wrapped with that shrink wrap stuff. It'll weigh about 400 pounds, give or take.

I had an engine shipped from AB to Canada this summer. Would recommend enclosing the engine in a plywood box on a pallet. Tie engine to pallet, box any loose items. Used Yellow Freight, would use them again.

Don't forget to insure the shipment as damage can easily happen and you don't want to find out that you're eating most of cost. If uninsured the claim will only be for something like $5 per pound. Mark it as a used engine as well as you get a different rate than new auto parts. Also mark the shipment and paperwork not to top load or breakdown the pallet. Yellow freight handles a lot of these type shipments although most Trucking companies can do them as well.

Shipped my 3.6 on a palet that had plywood sides nailed to the bottom. Inside was packed with styrofoam and did a fair job of keeping things from moving around. It could have been packed better but then thats life. Would spend the bux and get some insurance on it. I used Old Dominion Freight and was happy with their part of the deal.

Forward Air is the least costly in my experience, but it is terminal to terminal only. The do not pick up or deliver.

If you palletize it & wrap it in plastic they will not insure it. You must crate it. It depends on the value whether you want the insurance.

I just shipped a complete 87 911C engine ready to run. I estimated 450 lbs, but they weighed it at 656 lbs.

That was some sturdy crate, but that allowed me to insure it for full value.

I think they factor in the volume of the crate as well.

I expect the cost will be about $200 from Texas to Boston. I can post the info when I get the bill.

Forward air charges about $50 per 100lbs. + a fuel surcharge (currently around 19% of the total). Terminal to terminal

I like the air mail idea...but 1 improvement....carry a knife to cut the cords so that the package can be dropped directly to the customer!
