i've been restoring cars for over 20yrs and owned a restoration shop for 15yrs. i've never seen it necessary to step up on sand paper before you paint. you block your 2k nice and straight with 220, reprime with 2k, wetsand with 400 or 600 (depending on color) and spray away.

YUP.... missed the silver metalic part, 600 is the final necessary step.

John are you singing German folk songs and drinking beer while sanding? If not the paint will not come out like a factory finish. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

Nice work - I did this once many years ago and I know how hard it is. A question on the wetsanding, though...I thought you shouldn't wetsand primer because it can absorb water and eventually cause the paint to fail. Are some modern primers OK for wetsanding?

some are...a modern urethane primer/sealer will resist water. any of the yellow two part high builds do this. it's a great yellow too...I almost left the car that color. kinda buttercreamy.
