2 days of filling, priming, and blocking.

Spent the last 2 days filling, priming, and blocking DTW's 72. Its looking pretty good so far. Started lining up a shop to do the actual paint work, maybe should be in color by Dec sometime.

Ended yesterday with a full coat of high build, then zebra striped it this morning.

Blocked it down with 220, then reprimed this afternoon, needless to say, I'm bushed. Think I'll go back to work so I can rest.

That looks great John. But that can't be the same car that 2 years ago at Randall's Swap Meet the oil filler lid popped off when I opened it??? :D

Very nice job.

jhelgesen 11-09-2005 12:48 PM

Oil door hasn't been back on since, hehehehe. I do have the new hinge in line to be painted.

Hahah!!! Hal, I can't believe you remembered that. It is indeed the same poor little motley car. I had just finished the mechanical restoration before that meet and was just happy to be driving it. I was feeling very self-conscious about showing up to Randall's meet with a car that ugly, but I feel like everyone that came to check out the car saw the "vision" of what could be. Now thanks in large part to John, the vision is coming true.

The oil filler lid's hinge breaking off was definitely the icing on the cake. Too funny!!

Dave, I look forward to seeing the finished product. What color will it be?

dtw 11-09-2005 02:30 PM

Hal,
The car is going to be #936, VW Metallic Silver (original to the car - and also fulfilling a dream of mine to own a silver early car - some yahoo painted it the dingy white you saw it clothed in 2 years back). I'm almost done with the engine detailing and the interior is off in CA being done, so I should be ready to reassemble by the time John gives my car back to me. I'm getting really excited (and really nervous) about the reassembly process. Hope to be ALL DONE by the end of spring...and then take a very very long break from extensive automotive projects.

Dave, I am sure it will be terrific. Use Tom's car as a benchmark and you won't go wrong.

Keep us posted and we'll schedule a "Drive" to celebrate!

What is the purpose of "Zebra Striping"?

Great job so far BTW!

jhelgesen 11-09-2005 02:40 PM

The zebra striping is used as a guide coat. You spray on a contrasting color (I used black primer in a rattle can), then sand it off. If you have a low spot, it shows up by leaving the darker color. Very handy in finding pin holes and slight dings that wern't found earlier.

Great work John. Coming right along. Guess Ill go reprime mine now...

lhoward 11-09-2005 09:26 PM

I hope you don't stop at 220. 320 is the next step, wet sand with 400 and the finish up with wetsand of 600. Do atleast 400 or you will see some nice sand scratches once the car is painted.

Fishcop 11-09-2005 09:49 PM

Ditto lhoward... I go 600 now.

jhelgesen 11-10-2005 02:03 AM

Yes, I have 400 and 600 to go.

jm529 11-10-2005 05:51 AM

john,
if you know everthing is blocked out good and straight now, you can go directly to wetsanding with 600 and then you're ready to spray. if you're using a good 2k urethane primer for your last coats over the 220, there wont be any scratches.

jhelgesen 11-10-2005 06:31 AM

Thanks, I am considering just the 600. I have a few spots to do some detailing on. I'm using a k38 primer from ppg, nicest high build I have tried.

ken_xman 11-10-2005 07:09 AM

dont devalue the step up of the sand paper. I would NOT jump to 600.
You need to use 320, then 400.
600 is not necessary if you plan to use the K36 2X primer again.
I would wetsand the primer with 400 after this coat, and shoot a layer of sealer. The K36 in a different mix, different hardner, is a great sealer.
Then shoot base color & clear. Read your spec sheets & windows on spray times.

jm529 11-10-2005 07:39 AM

600 is definetly necessary because he is shooting a silver met. if it was a solid color he can spray over 400.

i've been restoring cars for over 20yrs and owned a restoration shop for 15yrs. i've never seen it necessary to step up on sand paper before you paint. you block your 2k nice and straight with 220, reprime with 2k, wetsand with 400 or 600 (depending on color) and spray away.

Bingo. Don't skip around. Primer is not suposed to be used as a filler. You sand out the previous scratches and then put a new layer of primer then sand again. Its alot more work but you will see the inperfections in going from 220-600. PRIMER IS NOT A FILLER.
