Quick question DME control module
 

About to order a chip from SW. He asked me to provide the number on top of the stock chip.

In order to access the chip I need to disconnect and pull out the DME control module (silver box).

Here is this weeks most stupid question: Is it necessary to disconnect the battery before I disconnect electric cable harness from DME box ?

A good rule of thumb is to ALWAYS disconnect the battery when doing anything related to the electrical system. This would be especially true with regard to the sensitive DME. Don't take any chances -- disconnect the battery.

I can't remember if I went that far, but it's not a bad idea to disconnect the battery.

As to the DME box...I recall it was easier if you first remove the hold-down nuts...then you can get better access / leverage on the big multi-pin connector. It is captured on one side and clippped on the other, so it rotates / clicks into place. Make sense? Having the stiff wiring harness and module together with the nuts first removed makes this a bit easier.

The DME box will have metal tabs that need to be bent straight ( bottom side) to remove the cover. Once you do that the box opens like a book. A search here ( Chris Bennet?) may show pics on the hazrds of doing this wrong...the box has small leg "stand-offs" that need to snap open, and then the "ribbon" side of teh box acts as a hinge for a book. You'll then see the chip. You may ( instead) ask Steve Wong for a install sheet with pics...which would help you now ahead of time.

Using the Pelican Parts BBS and not ordering from Pelican.

Just work like you are doing open heart surgery Work slow, clean and gentle like.

Remove the mounting nuts on the DME, and push the teats that secure the pin connector and gently pull the connector off the DME. Be aware that the connector is hinged at one side, looking at it it is hinged on the inboard side.

Take the DME to your kitchen table and use a CLEAN, DRY towel to lay the DME upside down to protect both the DME and table.

Very important....make sure there is no static electricity present!!!!!

I ground myself and everything used to the faucet to eliminate static.

Get a small thin blade flat screwdriver and gently but firmly pry the tabs up so they stand vertical.

Gently wiggle the board "book" out of the metal case.

You will see that the circuit boards are in book form, with the flat ribbon wire connecting the two of them.

Use a miniature srewdriver and you insert the blade into the two stands that seperate the boards and genly twist and pull the boards apart.

Locate the chip and again with the mini screwdriver VERY GENTLY AND CAREFULLY pry the chip out if it does not pull out with your fingers, (probably will not.)

Insert new chip, again...VERY GENTLY AND CAREFULLY into the socket.

The pins or teeth looking pins are very easy to bend.

Repeat steps in reverse.

The idle might have to be adjusted. The little screw on the AFM looking right at you might have to be turned out to increase (pretty sure it's out).

Technically you are supposed to jump out two terminals on the rear electrical panel. I can't remmember which off hand, the info is in Wayne's 101 project book.

Instructions will come with the chip, very east after you have done it one time.

I wanted the chip manufacturer´s own opinion on putting his chip in my particular Euro car. He was swift in replying, very nice and helpful and I would feel awful not ordering from him after such great reception. Sorry, Wayne.

FWIW.......If Loren has a "stock" DME in his car why don't we set up a drag race with someone who has installed a chip.

I mean if dyno runs are not good enough empirical data then how about some head to head data?

Lorens' point may be a valid one but it's really Steve and Waynes' business. They both need to and do figure out how to run their businesses. Stifling this board would hurt both of them and I'm sure both are aware of it.

-- when you look at the chip..be careful not to put it in backwards. One side will have a semi-circle notch....don't get the notch on the wrong ( opposite) side.

Get the "install" sheet from Steve W...it has pictures !

Markus I opened up my 84 euro and the chip was soldered down:confused:
It can still be changed but it's not quite plug and play. Hope you get lucky. Keep us posted.
