Another RSR Clone Project-Track Day

Yesterday the my RSR Clone took to the track for the first time at the CVR Lime Rock event. All I can say is wow!!! It was a great day.

The day started in the dark at 6AM with the long 1 1/2 hr drive from my house to the track. The temperatures were in the mid 20's. With no heat or defrost in the car, I had to drive with one window slightly cracked open to keep the windshield from fogging up. I nearly froze.
Once at the track, the sun was out and things started to warm up. I went through tech no problems and met my instructor who was already familiar with the car from reading the posts on our tech board.

Here's me warming up before the first session
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1131888491.jpg
The car performed flawlessly and I spent all three sessions catching up with the cars capability under the tutelage of my very capable instructor. By the last session, I had the car peaking out at 8000 RPM in 4th gear at the end of the main straight (about 125 mph) and was hitting 7500 RPM in 3rd gear at the end of "No Name" straight (95 mph). Stop watch acceleration runs on the highway show that 70-100 mph in 4th gear takes 5.5 seconds which is right where it should be for 285 engine HP and 2100 lbs curb wt.

I did pull one bone head move by running out of gas right before the checkered flag on my last session. I has to be towed back to the pits was totally embarrassed when I turned the key on and looked at the gas gage!!

There is lots more in this car and I will be looking forward to learning it's limits next spring with more track time.

Here's some more pics.

Quit, your making me want to build a track car. (Can't I promised the wife I wouldn''t, for now)

at7driver 11-13-2005 05:13 AM

Very nice... I really like the before and after shots on the previous thread.. cool... enjoy the "new" ride..

Wil Ferch 11-13-2005 05:15 AM

I've followed your posts from the very beginning.... and again say you have one of the most desirable and beautiful cars on this board.

for me ...the "build" was living through our eyes vicariously.... if I was in a position to do this.. I would most certainly build a car like yours instead of simply "writing the check" for a new car.

I know you want to track the car...and it shouldn't be a garage queen... but MAYBE you want to use some sort of stone chip protection for this beauty. There is spray-on tacky stuff that dries ( and peels off) as well as clear vinyl sheet. Heck...maybe even a one piece bra just for track days.

Only something to consider....

Cheers !

Absolutley beautiful Tom!

Good Luck with her and enjoy!

I hope you will not get offended as I have my own plans for something very similar.

I must say that the orange is hot!:D

Cheers

Beautiful car, Tom! Nice going!

GaryR 11-13-2005 06:11 AM

Tom -

I had gone over to your car a few times, missed you each time unfortuneatly.. I remember seeing your posts when you were building it and LOVING it, it surely did not dissapoint up close! Your attention to detail in the engine compartment actually had me salivating.. I was one of the cars coming up behind you on No-Name when you were "dying". Between the sun in our eyes and your position it was a bit hairy for a moment. You were extremely lucky to have Dan Jacobs as an instructor, he not only built my car from the ground up but spent a couple days with me in it at Limerock.. If you look at your first picture, that's my "Blue-tail devil" behind you (Blue/silver 911 SC) with me on the left and "Doc" Tietjen discussing vehicle dynamics.. lol

Glad you had a good time, I'll make a point to camp out by you in the spring!

Gary:D

rattlsnak 11-13-2005 06:16 AM

Awesome,... I felt the same way after I tracked mine the first time after the long building process. The grin from satisfaction was huge!!

(heat?? gotta have it...even in Georgia..i learned my lesson years ago!)

Slappy 11-13-2005 06:22 AM

Here are some more Tom.

It's a beautiful piece of work ... from the trunk to the engine compartment.

Driven as intended. Looks fantastic. Glad you enjoyed the maiden voyage. Yes, heat is good. you can hook it up only for defrost and have enough to keep the cabin warm on a cold day. SSIs plumbed directly to the defrost ducts work great.

Jack Olsen 11-13-2005 07:56 AM

That color looks so awesome on a track.

GaryR 11-13-2005 08:35 AM

There are a few more pictures of the event over on Rennlist is anyone would like to see...

Tom, I still think that your RSR is too nice to take to the track :D

I'm still raving about your car to any of my friends that'll still listen to me about it.

Glad to hear you had a great 1st track day with it. It does look really good on the track too.

Enjoy,
Ed

Doug E 11-13-2005 03:45 PM

Congrats on a succesfull first track day ... the car looks great !

As I'm sure you've already heard, track time is a very slippery slope :)

Porsche Doc 11-13-2005 03:49 PM

Yea!
Man! That car looks great.
You have done a really top noch job it it!:D
Way to go!

Jon Sailer 11-13-2005 04:26 PM

Tom,

I would be smiling too if I owned that car. Very nice indeed!

Dont you own a red 964 too? If so I presume this is your new track toy and what a toy it is! Good luck with it and keep posting pics of it and your events.

Vipergrün 11-13-2005 11:35 PM

Absolutely beautiful car! Drive it like you stole it :) I agree about the bra or some sort of protection, though.

tom1394racing 11-14-2005 01:16 AM

Guys

Thanks for all your comments on my first track day with the car.

Relative to paint protection....What are you guys using? I would be interested in something that could be applied to the noses and rear flares to protect against stone chipping both for street and track if it were no noticeable.

GrantG 11-14-2005 05:37 AM

Tom - I use 3M clear bra on the the nose and behind each wheel. If it's applied well, it's not very noticable.

Wil Ferch 11-14-2005 06:42 AM

I second the clear vinyl approach.....

Alternative.....magnetic "sheet" cut to fit.... cheap from sign shops....removable too if you want to do this for the street.

Wil

GrantG 11-14-2005 06:45 AM

But, magnet stuff doesn't work so well on carbon fiber or fiberglass ;)

jmz 11-14-2005 06:47 AM

posts like these are going to cost me money.

very nicely done sir.

Jadams1 11-14-2005 07:53 AM

I was hoping to see you car in at the NE fall run but we kept getting rained out. Great looking car! I can't wait to see it in person some day.

Yellowbird RS 11-14-2005 08:04 AM

Grant, do you do this yourself? I did the whole front of my G-series 911 with clear stuff and am about to do another one. PITA! The flat areas are easy, but there are some tricky parts on the valance and bumpers.

GrantG 11-14-2005 08:58 AM

Hi Andy - No, I had it done by a really great local expert, The Bra Man. However, I just directed a friend there and said his shop was closed. It's improtant to have someone do it who knows their stuff. I'd ask the dealer who does their work...

donstevens 11-14-2005 09:28 AM

Sweet

Wil Ferch 11-14-2005 12:08 PM

Ahhh...yep.. magnetic doesn't "stick" well to 'glass.... forgot 'bout that.

Comment then reverts to "generic" status...for use by others.

Good catch ! ... :)

Tom -

What is the paint code for your car, would love to paint my 930 that orange!

tom1394racing 02-01-2007 02:09 PM

Paint is the standard Porsche OEM "signal orange".

Mr9146 02-01-2007 06:08 PM

Never seen this car before ... it's very sweet.

Is there a detailed thread on Tom's car? Engine specs? Etc.?

tom1394racing 02-01-2007 06:58 PM

This thread has a detailed description with links to the project

Tom
If you need someone to apply clear bra material I have a friend that does it for many high end dealers. He lives in Westchester Co.(I think that is fairly close to you?) I have been meaning to have some done on my car but have not gotten around to it. I can put you in touch with him if you like. If he ends up doing your car I would have him do mine at the same time , I would love to see your car.

ros74911 02-02-2007 07:38 AM

tom, that car is just awesome. dang. nice. that's my dream car. anyway, i would put a clear bra on it you can buy at a dealer or online. that should protect your car's nose. good luck!

overman 02-02-2007 10:47 AM

Beautiful car Tom!

-Wayne, Please include Tom's car in the proposed Pelican calendar!

GaryR 02-02-2007 01:16 PM
