Another RSR Clone Project-Track Day

Yesterday the my RSR Clone took to the track for the first time at the CVR Lime Rock event. All I can say is wow!!! It was a great day.

The day started in the dark at 6AM with the long 1 1/2 hr drive from my house to the track. The temperatures were in the mid 20's. With no heat or defrost in the car, I had to drive with one window slightly cracked open to keep the windshield from fogging up. I nearly froze.
Once at the track, the sun was out and things started to warm up. I went through tech no problems and met my instructor who was already familiar with the car from reading the posts on our tech board.

The car performed flawlessly and I spent all three sessions catching up with the cars capability under the tutelage of my very capable instructor. By the last session, I had the car peaking out at 8000 RPM in 4th gear at the end of the main straight (about 125 mph) and was hitting 7500 RPM in 3rd gear at the end of "No Name" straight (95 mph). Stop watch acceleration runs on the highway show that 70-100 mph in 4th gear takes 5.5 seconds which is right where it should be for 285 engine HP and 2100 lbs curb wt.

I did pull one bone head move by running out of gas right before the checkered flag on my last session. I has to be towed back to the pits was totally embarrassed when I turned the key on and looked at the gas gage!!

There is lots more in this car and I will be looking forward to learning it's limits next spring with more track time.

I've followed your posts from the very beginning.... and again say you have one of the most desirable and beautiful cars on this board.

for me ...the "build" was living through our eyes vicariously.... if I was in a position to do this.. I would most certainly build a car like yours instead of simply "writing the check" for a new car.

I know you want to track the car...and it shouldn't be a garage queen... but MAYBE you want to use some sort of stone chip protection for this beauty. There is spray-on tacky stuff that dries ( and peels off) as well as clear vinyl sheet. Heck...maybe even a one piece bra just for track days.

Only something to consider....

I had gone over to your car a few times, missed you each time unfortuneatly.. I remember seeing your posts when you were building it and LOVING it, it surely did not dissapoint up close! Your attention to detail in the engine compartment actually had me salivating.. I was one of the cars coming up behind you on No-Name when you were "dying". Between the sun in our eyes and your position it was a bit hairy for a moment. You were extremely lucky to have Dan Jacobs as an instructor, he not only built my car from the ground up but spent a couple days with me in it at Limerock.. If you look at your first picture, that's my "Blue-tail devil" behind you (Blue/silver 911 SC) with me on the left and "Doc" Tietjen discussing vehicle dynamics.. lol

Glad you had a good time, I'll make a point to camp out by you in the spring!

Awesome,... I felt the same way after I tracked mine the first time after the long building process. The grin from satisfaction was huge!!

Driven as intended. Looks fantastic. Glad you enjoyed the maiden voyage. Yes, heat is good. you can hook it up only for defrost and have enough to keep the cabin warm on a cold day. SSIs plumbed directly to the defrost ducts work great.

Thanks for all your comments on my first track day with the car.

Relative to paint protection....What are you guys using? I would be interested in something that could be applied to the noses and rear flares to protect against stone chipping both for street and track if it were no noticeable.

Tom - I use 3M clear bra on the the nose and behind each wheel. If it's applied well, it's not very noticable.
