Ultimate Brake Setup

As it is getting colder here in the northeast, I have started to embark on my annual winter car projects. What would be considered to be an ideal brake setup for the track? (i.e. VCI, etc)

Have you read this?

Other than a few recent variations on a theme it is pretty comprehensiveI Even if I do say so myself).

The sweet spot is 993 calipers on 930 or 930 sized rotors all around

I have the custom 930 Turbo setup from Steve at Rennsport and it has fantastic feel and fade-proof performance (and fits under Fuchs 15" rims)

That's because of the rotors, there are several relatively minor technical reasons why the 993s are preferred.

Did you mean "sweet spot is 993 calipers on 933 or 930 sized rotors all around "?

Bill - Will 993 calipers still fit under Fuch 15's? What are the advantages of the 993 calipers over the machined 930's? Is it the staggered piston sizes? I noticed that my 993 wears its brake pads a bit more evenly...

993 calipers will not fit under 15" fuchs and will need spacers under 16's. The 993 front pad is larger than the 930, although the rears are the same size. Another option is the 964/951 caliper front and rear. They require more machining up front, but also use the 930 sized pads front and rear. IMO these are both very nice upgrades for anyone but a hardcore racer. The 993/951 calipers are alot easier to find than the 993.

951 rear is the same as 964 rear(once the bleeds and feeds are swapped), there is no shortage of any of them.

I've done it both ways, believe me, the 993 calipers are the way to go.

Only purists, that don't need big brakes anyway need 15s

Either the 930 or 993 on 930 is all the brake any of the n/a '89 and earlier cars will ever need. Wheel/tire choice is the main differentiating factor as I broke it down on the reference page, hp/weight and track will determine need. more hp or more eweight will need more brake, some tracks are harder on brakes than others

While the ultimate would be a set of ceramic PCCBs, the next step up is 993RS, but you will need wide 17s for them. With spokes designed for caliper clearance

I think that the GTP setup is less appropriate for our cars because of bias concerns

You just need the adapters in front, never seen the 993 rear adapted to the 930 3.5" trailing arm, it really dosen't get you enough to make it worth while, there are only very minor technical advantages to the 993 fronts like the differential bores which help keep taper wear to a minimum

The most comon 930 upgrade is to the 993RS like on my car or the 993tt which will look exactly the same but has less rear bias, a desireable trait or the relatively tail heavy turbos

Here is some Brembo GTP's on an 84. Need a 17 inch wheel. They are slightly front biased so a dual mc with bias adjustment is recommended (By me, so take that with a grain of salt )

Cheers
