2.4 S without external oil cooler

i was wondering how many folks here have a 2.4S, without a front/external cooler ( even just the trombone style )

and how hot does your car get in sunny weather?

mine got up to 240 F (117C) on a longer drive, wasn't gunning it that badly , but the weather was 90F in the shade ( and more in the sun ), it didn't cool down on high way cruise speed either.

it's not the redline on the gauge yet, but that's too hot , but i wonder if that's normal for an S without a cooler, or if something else might be wrong with my engine to get that hot

anybody else out there with a 2.4S and no cooler?
if so , does your engine overheat if it's hot and sunny weather ??

Stijn,

My Targa is only a dozen or so VINs earlier than yours, and it came without a cooler ... fabbed my own system back in '85 to take care of the hot summer temps that ran in the 230°F - 240°F range on spirited drives, and 250°F once on a 117°F day here in West Texas in 1980!

So, your temps don't sound that far out of my experience range. My first suggestion would be to remove the oil cooler and clean all of the dirt and debris off the fins that might be blocking airflow or impeding heat transfer ... mine had lots of grass clippings and dust collected on it. Next, remove the fan assembly and vacuum out the same type of debris on top of the cylinders and heads ...

my internal oil cooler is clean , was properly cleaned during the engine rebuild( so the heads are clean too )...

i guess i allready knew the answer before posting, but wanted to hear from other 2.4S owners without cooler... to reasure myself that it is quite normal for these cars to run hot in hot weather if they don't have the external cooler

Stijn,
My 73 coupe also without a cooler also runs pretty damn hot . Once it gets around 30C+ and driving it hard the temp climes fast, I would not want to stuck in traffic.

Once I see 225C I start taking it easy because it gets to 240-250C just to damn easy..... My RSR project I am building I am going to run 2 coolers just so temp is not a problem.

Wow! I thought all S's came with the front cooler. They generate too much HP (and heat) to run without one.

not the 73's... dunno why , maybe it was a prelude to the "run em hotter for emissions" thing, a forerunner to the 5 blade fan & thermal reactors...

I never could figure out the why of it...S models came with a front radiator cooler standard in 1972. Then in '73, the cooler was an option, and trombone???? Sorry, no report sans cooler, just damned grateful my car came with one. (edit) Stijn? with cheap surface freight, an elephant racing lines and cooler set up could possibly be there in time for your winter project?
