Brake master cylinder or brake booster problem?
I have a question on how to tell the difference between a brake master cylinder failing vs. the brake booster failing.
When the engine is on, the brake pedal would be mushy and starts to give. With repeated application of the brake, it would get firm again. With the engine off, the brake pedal is firm then gives way, going down to the floor. I think it is the brake master cylinder. Is this correct? Thanks, John |

I vote for the master cylinder
I had these symptoms in my BMW last month and after changing the master cylinder it was completely cured. If you don't change the mater cylinder you will see how even when the engine on, it is increasingly difficult to get the pedal firm again until it gives up. The problem is caused by loss of pressure within the master cylinder. You could change the gaskets in the cylinder or change the whole part (I did the latter) |
