Regime change
Hi folks,
Just wanted to make a post, since after 9 years of tender and loving ownership of my 80 SC Targa, I finally decided to make the move to something a little newer. I have always loved silver cars, and began toying with the idea of a silver coupe. I searched everywhere for months and came up with no soap. Finally, in desperation, I posted a WTB ad here in the Pelican 'cars for sale' board, and lo and behold, I soon had an answer from a fellow Pelicanite with an 87 coupe who lived no more than about 90 miles from me and works in SF (about 20 min from me). He sent me some pics and the car really looked good. I had him bring it to a friend of mine's shop in San Rafael where I put it up on the lift and gave it a pretty thorough inspection. To my joy, the car was in great condition. A pretty, orginal, unmolested coupe with sunroof (hadda replace the targa with something!) and black interior. My dream car! We agreed on a price, and now I'm the proud new owner! I've been really busy sorting things out over the past week or so. First order of business was to swap my 7's and 8's (which had recently had Harvey Wiedman's attentions) over for the original 6's and 7's. Fri. I ripped out the A\C and a Clifford alarm, and today I gave her a valve adjust, new plugs, air filter and oil change. Further plans call for the ditching of the tail (you like it or you hate it; I hate it. Look for it for sale as soon as I can locate a matching silver lid), and probably the stone guards on the rear quarters. Car still has the original shocks, so some new Bilsteins or Boges are in the immediate future, as well as turbo tie rods and bump steer kit. I haven't had time to take any glam shots, but here are a couple taken by the PO before I switched wheels. Beautiful! ![]() ![]() ![]() Some things I have noticed thus far: 1) The Carrera is definitely not as "rorty" as the SC. It's smoother and quieter. dwholberg described the Carrera as a gentleman, and the SC as a hooligan. I think I agree wholeheartedly with him, and I dunno if I like that. Throttle response does not seem as immediate as the SC, and I don't hear that beautiful wailing howl from the engine room like I used to (both have the stock exhaust). My mission in the coming days will be to embark on a weight loss program (A\C already gone) to rectify that. Maybe the sound deadening pad needs to go too? 2) Standard H5's are PATHETICALLY dim compared to the H4's with 90\100 bulbs I painstakingly installed in the SC. Can't see a damned thing! 3) DME is light years ahead of the CIS in terms of mileage and driveability although (as previously mentioned) throttle response is a little off. Nice to not have to worry about setting the timing anymore... The distributor's empty once you pull the black cover below the rotor off! 4) When warm, the G50 is much easier to shift than the 915, but when cold it's balkier (bought some Mobil1 75-90 today on the strength of other posts here. Damn stuff is expensive!). I'm not quite used to the hydraulic clutch, but truth be told, I think I preferred the cable clutch for its feel. All in all, it's going to be a lot of enjoyable work to get it completely sorted like my SC is, so look forward to lots of questions from a Carrera newbie in future! ianc P.S. I really feel like a villainous traitor turning the SC out to pasture. When I switched the wheels over I felt like a rapist in the night. The poor car seemed to be crying as I despoiled it. I really hate it, but I can't afford to keep both of them... I guess the best I can do is make sure it goes to good home; someone who's excited as I was to own a 911 when I bought it. Someone who will love it and cherish it like I did for all these years. Had it for twice as long as I've gone out with any woman and it's given me a helluva lot less backtalk! So far, my advice is that if you've got an SC that is in good shape otherwise, but with a tired engine, definitely stick a 3.2 in and keep driving! Poor old girl. I could weep, but she'll find a new lover... ![]()

Yes, welcome to the Gentlemenīs Club !
![]() And, yes - loose the tail. Car looks fabulous ! Lack of throttle response as compared to the SC is one thing that should partly be rectified with a SW chip as of many testimonies. I am going that way myself as soon as I can find time.

There she is !!!!!
Congrats Ian, looks great !! You should come by again and drive mine, I have the SW chip, Borla exhaust and Fabspeed bypass pipe. I never had an SC to compare, but I keep up OK with the other SCs on fun runs and at the track. So far anyway ![]() you could always keep your tail for track days..... -Chris
