				Blaupunkt Knob Fix

My Blaupunkt (my son pronounces it Blau-punk-it) suffered from a loose on-off/volume knob. Thus, to turn the radio on or off, I had to remove the knob to turn the shaft.

What happens is the plastic retainer inside the rubber knob cracks and loses its strength. Knowing that an older Blaupunkt replacement knob is probably nearly the cost of the radio, I figured out a cheaper fix. I mixed up a small batch of laminating epoxy and microballoons (building and flying model airplanes definitely helps in the world of keeping older Porsches alive and well) and applied it to the center of the knob. I then coated the shaft the knob slips onto with vaseline (you don't want to permanently glue the knob on -- you just want to restore the knob back to where it can correctly grip the shaft). Once that was done, I pressed the knob on and let it sit overnight. Works great now and the knob can be slipped on and off. |
