Thumbs down Sportomatic tranny problem

Looking at a car right now and need to know what are the repair costs to have the sporto tranny seals replaced. All gears are slipping so I assume there is oil seeping into the clutch area. Otherwise car is in original condition as listed.

What year?
How long have you driven it?
Describe the “slipping” better.

Best,
Grady

It's a 1975 model

This is a listing. Can't determine anything except what was described in ad. Did access the sportomatic.org website and found someone with the same problem. Seals were tough to find since Porsche didn't make them anymore but a british seal of sorts was used as replacement. What's the cost of this fix? Need to know asap. Thx!

OK, it is a ’75 with a 925 3-speed Sportomatic
Type 925/10. The transmission number should
be in the range of 7650001 to 7652000.

There shouldn’t be any difficulty finding seals for
the transmission. Even if you can’t find them
through Porsche, all you need is the size
dimensions and a seal supply house can find
a suitable seals.

Here is the gear chart for the 925/10.

Here is an interesting thought; what if the clutch
isn’t slipping. What they think is slip is actually
the normal proper functioning of the torque
converter. The red arrows below can feel like
slip, particularly if you start off in 3rd.

I would be more concerned with the condition of
the car. Is there rust or prior crash repair? It
could turn out to be a very nice, low mileage ’75.
You can always install a 5-speed type 915
transmission.

Best,
Grady

Car was listed on Ebay

It was just sold. I didn't pull the trigger not knowing what the costs were. It was black with a tan interior all original. Another missed op. Someone help me. I let several sportos that took a while to find just slip away. Grady pm me if you have any leads. Thx!

Grady do you have another chart for a 4 speed (905/00)?

The seals can be reproduced using bulk materials, a new torque converter would be the hardest and costliest part to replace.

The costs to fix are hard to determine, the more parts needed the higher the price. Luckily many used parts are available due to many swaps for manual trans.

BD,

Here is the 905/00 and one for the 905/01. The
1st gear on these is a Sportomatic only part.
The 2nd gear is a 2-3 gear for a 901 and those
gears will fit the 905. The Sportomatic 3rd and
4th are the same gears as a 901 4th and 5th &
vice versa. It is just as easy to re-gear a 905
Sportomatic as it is a 901/911 5-speed.

Send me your e-mail address if you want a high
-res image. I have it as a 1M .bit file.

To the contrary, any competent automatic transmission
race shop can rebuild the torque converter. In fact
you can easily have it modified for a higher stall speed.
The ’72-’72 911S 925 transmission has a stall speed
of 2700 rpm. With a smaller (2.0S) engine, a stall
speed of 3000 rpm is a lot of fun. You have to tailor
your normal driving above that rpm.

gwl, please post the ebay link.

Best,
Grady
