Bilsteins or Boges - which were stock on '88 Carreras?
So while I was under the car changing tranny fluid, I noticed that in the rear I have green Bilsteins (HD, I assume) and in the front, it has a green housing with an orange-ish Boge insert.
Anyone have any ideas as to why an '88 would be set up this way (stock ride height)? And which of the two brands was stock in '88? Thanks,

Ah, the benefit of complete records....
How many miles on the car? Some shops change the rears if they drop the engine - but don't replace the front (that's what the PO of mine did). Boge struts are stock for Carrera's, but of course you can put in a Bilstein insert (and should so if the front is original).

Both were stock in '88. You could get Boge or Bilstein.

"stock" - yes, but bilsteins were optional, while boges were standard (as with many years of 911s).

Were the Boge strut housings green (I seem to remember them being black)? I don't know why anyone would replace Bilsteins with Boge inserts but that's how it looks to these untrained eyes.

Boge housings are usually black.... but they can be painted ( ! )
Boge outside surface should have some identification stampings on it...maybe beneath a layer of Cosmoline. Look. Wil

The Bistein will also have a roll pin at the bottom of the strut housing, just above the ball joint fastening bolt. This roll pin holds the strut cartridge in place, Boges do not have them. The boges also have boge stamped on them about half way up the body of the strut.
Cheers

Plus the Bilsteins ( i.e strut and housing)...won't have a "bulge" on the shock body right above the welded-on locating ring that holds the spindle in-place. This lack of "bulge"...allows raising the spindles to RSR specs for Bilstein struts. Normally, this can't be done with Boges or Koni's. ( Chris Bennet... I know there are exceptions...
