930 probs..HELP!

Gentlemen,
I have an 88 turbo that has had some mods done to it then I moved. I am currently on the gulf coast and there is no one to work on my car. So I am rather stuck doing it myself. Am an engineer so I can figure it out given enough pointers..please help.
This is what I have and whats going on.
Headers to test pipe, 64mm garret, full length intercooler, original CIS, the distributer vacuum is NOT hooked up for some odd reason, there is no OX sensor anymore.
Problem : Car ran like a top for a month or so but is constantly in need of tuning. Has gotten to the point that it hesitates around 5000 rpm with an almost backfire and black smoke. This happens only when I slam the pedal to the floor. If I am careful and feather the gas while watching the boost gage this does not occur until 3rd gear around 6000 rpm ..HELP?!! Any ideas?
By the way, I already searched for vac leaks.
Preston

Sounds like ignition break-up to me. If ur seeing black smoke, fuel isn't being ignited and this causes a sudden rich condition. Excess fuel is being dumped out the exhaust and this is most probably causing your "almost" backfire sound I'd say.

You say the distributor vacuum isn't hooked up? Maybe it popped off for some unknown reason? Is there a loose vacuum line hanging around that vicinity?

What cd box are you running? Bosch or Perma? Also check the green wire coming off the dist, if it is burnt as it comes out, may be too much resistance feeding back into the CD. Im replacing all my cust cd boxes to MSD.. I have diagrams to asist you if needed.... And they are only 250 at kragen( 6AL)

There is a loose vacuum hanging down ..but not connected to the distributor. I plugged it when I found it. It is of a cordlike substance that is old enough to be hard now. With no vac advance..would this be my culprit?

That would be part of the issue. With that disconnected, it will cause a hesitation, but not a smoke issue. I would also have the timing checked.
You say its in need of constant tuning? What do you keep having todo to it?

Heres what i would do...

Ohm wire from Koax (green wire on the side of dist) cable to the CD unit.
Check timing and vacume adv unit
Ohm spark plugs wires and pull plugs if you can. Line up as you pull them, take pic and post ( best way to find an issue)

Im leaning towards a cd unit going bad ( this may leave you stranded)
