Carving Mulholland - the results...
We all made it -- I think. We lost about half the group when a turn onto Mulholland off Las Virgines was missed. It ended up being only Jack, Chef, Emission, Wayne, myself and a guy and his friend in a 993 cab (sorry, I never met the guy by name).
The run lasted only an hour, maybe a bit more. But the driving was fairly vigorous as there was very little traffic. Thanks again to Jack for organizing it. Hopefully someone will post photos. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. ![]()

What a blast!
Yes, the roads were nearly empty and the "enforcement" never made a showing on any of the roads. I think we had upwards of 20 cars - pretty good for a holiday morning!

Is that a GT-3? how'd he do keeping up with Jack, considering it's one of the best handling cars EVER?

Had a great time. Thanks to everybody for coming out. Very good to meet everybody and start putting "Pelican" names with real names and faces. We (Kevin and Mary in the 993) had a good time and the driving was vigorous. I don't think that the pace could fairly be called "leisurely." Almost no traffic (except for coming up on a few bicyclists at inconvenient points) and a very clear day. The group definitely got splintered at Las Virgenes, so I hope everybody had a good time regardless of the route they took.
It looked like Jack was making a new friend on the shoulder of the 101 on his way home - hope that our fearless leader made it back home without any additional battle scars. Look forward to doing another run. Special kudos to Luis (89 black cab) for coming up from the OC to join us. We're planning on joining the OC run on Sunday on Ortega, so look forward to meeting up with the OC crew. Thanks everybody!

Great fun. Thank you all for a fantastic time. Absolute pleasure meeting all of you.
Jack, thanks for doing a great job at coordinating the run. Kevin and Mary, thanks for the kind words. I will try to make the Ortego run but it might be tough this weekend. If not, I am sure we will meet up again. Scott, Like your targa. Great color. I loved the GT3 and the White Turbo. Awesome stuff. I turned west on Las Virgenes because I wanted to go to Malibu and head south along the coast after that. Here are some pics. Happy Thanksgiving!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

A great run. I'm assuming that no one kissed any rock or smacked a bicyclist.
Yes, I made a new friend on the 101 on the way home. I'd just left a message for my wife saying that everything had gone great -- and then I saw red and blue in my rear-view, and got a Thanksgiving gift from the CHP. ![]() Ah, well. What are you going to do? I'll see if I can get a judge to agree to some additional traffic school.

This needs some work......
Great turn out! I didn't recognize many of the group except Wayne, Marco (Mr9146), David (DD74), Chris (porcupine), and met one new guy, 89something (sorry, bad on names...great car, BTW) and, of course, Jack.
The usual routine, up Stunt Rd. and stop for a few minutes. This is never very far into the run, just a quick regroup after a stop sign kinda spreads everyone out. After a few minutes, a couple of guys took off and everyone scrambled to their cars to follow. I don't even know if they were originally in the Gelson's group. Jack is off like a shot, as usual and the GT3 is right behind. I crowded my way to the front at the stop and got a wave from the fellow next (89something) to me to go off 4th. Wayne (3rd in line) had a passenger, so he waved me by after the first half dozen turns (sorry, ol' buddy, I wasn't really trying to hassle you bY being on your ass). I can see the GT3 an 1/8 mile up, no sign of Jack, he's outta there. 10 more turns and I'm losing the GT3 big time. Well, duh. So, I pull off at a turnout after a good 5-7 minutes of being all by myself. I wait almost a minute and here comes Wayne. No trouble with the car, I wave him on. I wait another 20-30 seconds and a group comes up. I fall in behind. Not to long after that, we are on Los Virgines and blow by Mulholland, which was the designated route. I failed to note the proper route, figuring I'd be able to follow the lead. This happens every time, people get lost. Well, by then, I realize my gas pedal has broken at the hinge. Only the rubber is holding it in place. Right about then, David starts pointing out the window to the left. This is a "point by" to most, but he was trying to say that we needed to make a u-turn. I f I had gone by him, I would have probably ended up in his door. (We need to work on signalling, too.) I knew the way I was headed would take my back to the 101 and home. With the pedal the way it was, I thought that best. In front of me were 4-5 more 911s that simply got on the freeway as well. I wonder if they would have run some more if they didn't miss the turn? We need some mid pack "guides" to help keep things sorted. In the brief meeting before taking off, I think 1 or 2 drivers that know they know the route should be recognized. There are obviously 3, maybe 4 different paces people are willing to drive. All out, fast, spirited, and cautious. I will drive all out, but I'm no match for Jack, a GT3 and some of the light cars with big HP. But, guys, I have never seen Jack at the end of any of these things, except once, and I think he had already ordered breakfast by the time I walked in to the restuarant we were going to. He and the big guns are long gone at the 3rd turn. Maybe we can get a designated guide, or two, in the line at strategic positions so everyone can get to the end together. I don't often get to the end of one of these runs due to a number of reasons, mostly my own circumstances, but loosing the group entirely is a bummer for several of the drivers. Just my 02. I had a great time, the roads were great. The cars looked at their finest (well, except for Maybe Jack's and the Ragamuffin ![]() EDIT: Damn. I'm sorry about the ticket, Jack. You go to the trouble of posting these things and organizing them. That's not a proper payback for a guy who puts so much into the Porsche community thru Pelican. '06 will be your best year yet, I'm loadin' up some good Karma for you. Last edited by Zeke; 11-24-2005 at 11:18 AM.. |

Hi Zeke,
No trouble at all. I waved you on because the main group was going right on Las Virgenes to go back to the Valley, but I needed to go left to Malibu. Cool to remember 89something..... In a few weeks I should have my "Wickd89" plates and everything will be right in the world. Take care, Luis

We had a nice time, too (white 74 Carrera) -- some spirited driving and another incredible SoCal morning. Wow!
Bummed that I missed the turn and lost the group! I definitely would have been up for more. Then again, anytime I end these runs with no ticket and a running car -- well, not a bad day. Sorry to hear about the CHP encounter, Jack, and thanks for organizing the run. Definitely better than the Macy's parade!!! And after the 'exercise,' I can feel better about pigging out today. Nice group! |
