Speedometer electrical??

I just noticed my speedometer / odometer was not moving at all. I know it was yesterday as the wife was giving me crap going to fast

Is there an electrical component to the speedometer? I am only experienced with cables....

Where does the cable / wiring go?

Thanks!

Porsche and many other manufactures use an electric drive speedo. I think Porsche was an early convert (in the early mid 70s) I have forgotten the exact year. There is a sending unit in the transaxle . The wires come into the car under the rear centre where the shifter coupler is. I have seen the wires get tangled in the shift shaft. If you are lucky thats where your problem is Otherwise you have a lot of wire tracing to do.The sender will show a pulse on an ohm meter if you find the right connections and turn the engine over.
Oddly there is also a connection from the automatic heter control which runs through the speedo. I had my speedo burn up on my 1986 and it stopped the heater from working.

It looks like there is a fused line to the speedo. This schematic is on our hosts main page.
You might want to check the fuse and pull the instruments and check back there to inspect for damage to adjacent wiring so you can asses / isolate the problem - maybe chaffed wiring.
G21 is the speedometer, G22 is the sender, S13 is the fuse.

oops, this is a 78 - not sure what yours would be with the '87 engine.

You may want to look into this thread.

Replacing burnt parts in tachometer

It describes a speedometer internal burn due to a blown capacitor on the electronics board. Not an uncommon problem. I have read about a similar experience on another thread.
