Look at my Outerbearing--- not very round
I'm in the process of a suspension overhaul on my 72 2.4 T.
I pulled the left wheel bearings hoping to just do an inspect/repack. I found that the outer bearing isn't very round. Look at the flat spot between 6 o'oclock. My guess is that this bearing/race needs to be replaced. I have been reading all of the posts on this and it seems that pounding them in and out is bad news. It seems like heating/cooling and using a press is the proper way to do this which means that I will probably just have it done by someone reputable since I don't own these tools. Unless there is a good way for the DIYer to do this. Again I have been reading the hundreds of posts.... and I don't want to pound these out. Ian

It is a really quick and easy job with a press. You can find a cheap press at local parts places usually pretty cheap. You probably will not use it often, but when you need on it sure is nice to have...

that flat spot is in the cage. doesn't mean a thing.

What am I looking for when inspecting inner/outer front wheel bearings?
I have a small flat spot on the cage on the inner bearing but it seems to spin clean both inside and outside of the hub.
What am I looking for to determine if I should replace or simply re-pack? Thanks. |

pitting of the rollers or race, rust, or little metal particles in the grease between the rollers. lots of races have microscopic irregularities if you look hard enough. that doesn't necessarily make them bad.
