Center fill tank questions

I'm really starting to think about doing the center fill gas tank mod. I've looked through the archives and dug up some good information, but have a couple questions.

Assuming that you are not being completely period correct or too concerned about weight savings (but want the basic look). Street use.

1. I see that most people keep the gas flap on the fender. Does anyone ever get rid of the flap? Smooth out the fender? It seems like if you were big on weight savings and you removed the original filler neck, this would make sense.

2. Does anyone keep the original filler neck in place in addition to the center fill neck? Seems like if you aren't worried about weight, and you're keeping the fender gas flap, you could do this and have the option of normal filling for daily street use.

3. I may never get (or spend the $$$) for the original style gas cap, but want to have something that is at least a similar diameter (4-4.5"?). Is there any other neck/cap combo I could look for that would be similar? Truck, bus, etc?

Thanks for any advice. (pics are welcome)

Heres one way to do it:

More than one way to skin a cat: Through the hood center gas filler project

There is a steel version of the 100mm Blau cap that is still reasonably cheap from the VW bug parts place like Bughaus. The correct Blau filler neck for this cap is still available overseas if you can find someone to buy one for you.

I have a few of the Blau filler necks and repro steel caps, but Im hoarding them. If I did this mod to my car today, I would use the steel Blau reproduction cap attached to a modern and commonly available filler neck like in the link above. For the catch basin under the hood Id use a black rubber sewer pipe reducer from the local hardware parts store.

Heres the group buy we did on the filler necks that you missed out on. Get in tocuh with George and make sure you are on the list in case he does another group buy. It has been mentioned. It could happen

I recently finished a center fill on my car. There are several pics in the following link...

911ST update 10/24

I did end up removing the fender door and filler assembly associated with that. I wanted to keep a very simple and clean look so it made sense to get rid of it.

The hardest part is probably lining the filler neck up with your hole in your hood. Have someone there to help you but if you can at least get it close, you can bend the filler neck to match your hood hole exactly. Then after you get it all lined up and finish welding, it will have moved again! Just bend it back...I used a jack handle and all is good again.

Good luck, it is a very cool project but also a lot of work!!!

Thanks Chris,

I'm in love with your ST. Is it done yet?

I grabbed all your photos for my files. I picked up some parts today that should help me get started but it looks like I'll have to hunt down the filler neck. I picked up a spare gas tank, 2 NOS gas caps (from who knows what) and some parts that may get used for the flange seal (all this for $20 at the junkyard). The tank is from a later model that takes the small spare, so I do have a little more room for the new filler neck.
I'm still debating if I'll keep the filler flap or not. We have plenty of Winter to come, so I have time...

Thanks for the input (and inspiration)

Steve
