Putting engine and trans together

I dropped the engine and transmission in my 1986 3.2 Carrera last week so I could have the 915 transmission rebuilt. The drop went very smoothly and the engine and trans were separated once they were out of the car. Now the trans has been rebuilt by our local shop and I have installed a new clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing and throw out bearing. Fortunately, the clutch release fork looked fine and shows no sign of cracking or stress. This component was not replaced. This weekend I tried to reunite the engine and transmission and I can't get them together. The clutch was installed with the proper alignment tool and all of the components are OEM. The release fork seems to be engaging the throw out bearing correctly, at least I can't see any binding. Is this supposed to be a tight fit? Should I have to use pressure and a lot of wiggling to get the trans in place or should they just slide together smoothly? Any Pelicanites in Las Vegas want to show me how this is done?

Thanks,
Randy

Randy,

If you haven't done so, remove the starter. Once you have it off, you should be able to stick your fingers inside and work the fork into place. It's a l'il bit tricky, but nowhere near "difficult."

Basically, get it started going together, work the fork via the starter opening and then slide it the rest of the way. May take a little wiggling and jiggling (of the transmission ) but other than that, provided everything is lined up correctly, it should slip right together.

Randy

How close together can you get them? If more than 1/4" apart you have a problem somewhere. If closer than that you should be able to use a couple of bolts to pull them together.

The starter is off and I can easily align the fork into the throw-out bearing. Unfortunately that's as far as I can get it. There is at least 2 inches between the trans and engine. I don't think the input shaft splines are even touching the disc yet. What I think is happening is that the throw-out bearing slider is not lining up with the throw-out bearing hole. I may just need another set of hands to wiggle it into place. Any other Randy's care to offer an opinion?

IF neither Randy Wells nor Randy Jones answers...
then you might try jiggling the trans. with respect to the engine as you push them together. It helps if you have 2 people. Don't use too much force...

First, the obligatory "stupid" questions (since I've done enough dumb things myself to fill several volumes)

did you remove the clutch fork for inspection? Is it back on the right way?

did you align the clutch when putting the flywheel on?

If so,
have an asst. rotate the crank pulley back and forth as you slide the transmission on as randywebb said

The clutch disc was aligned with the correct alignment tool and appears to be centered. The clutch fork was removed, cleaned and inspected. No cracks or bending was found. The fork was reinstalled with new rubber bushings. As far as I can tell, there is only one way to install the fork given the position of the roll pin. I think I just may need another set of hands to help wiggle the trans into place.

I gather from everybody's comments that once everything is aligned, the trans should slip easily into place. In other words, if more than just wiggling is required, then something is out of place. Sound right?

Yup, they should mate up pretty easily. This is a long shot......but...... did any of the engine to trans studs get bent while the motor was out?

Cheers

The studs appear straignt and line up with the holes in the transmission. Thanks for the suggestion though.
