Engine Compartment Sound Mat

I changed my Engine Compartment Sound Mat the other day. I noticed that the mat was very brittle and deteriorating. After removing the old one, the front window defrost vents blew a ton of crap into the cabin that looked like crystallized mat remnants.

I know that I made real mess removing the old mat and allot of particulate fell all over the motor. My question is where could it have gotten into the vents?

Heater, A/C hoses are getting air from the engine bay to the front dash aren't they?

The foam rot was probably swirled up and sucked into the fan and then into the heater ducts. The fan moves the air into the heat exchangers for the mostpart.

Ah thats what I thought. So there is an opening that is by design that draws in outside air?

Sound Difference

Was there a noticable difference in engine noise in the cabin?

Did you buy one of the OEM mats that is now made of lighter material? Is it truely lighter than the old mat?

The air on a air cooled 912/912 is drawn through the engine fan, then pushed through the heater valves into the chassis heater tube system. From there it goes through the plastic fan housing located under front trunk cowl (69-89 years) so it can be distributed to the cabin or windshield.
This is why you will experience (when the heat is on) instant winshield fogging when driving thru deep water, the exquisite perfume of burning oil from leaks dropping onto the heat exchanger, and dust /debris getting sucked into the engine compartment

Actually no. I went to Home Depot and purchased a hot water tank aluminum shield and fabricated it to fit. It is not perfect but I am happy with it. Yes it is very light and was only $14.

I had seen someone else post about using the same material so i decided to try it. Seems to work very well. Definately quieter too!

always use a shop vac when pulling off the old mat -- plastic over engine if it's in the car is good too

see what you can do now w/the shop vac.
